Dollypop on TV

Many of you know that Dollypop has been teaching summer school in Brooklyn, NY. This is not the school he normally teaches at during the school year. The present school in not air conditioned nor are there working fans. To make matters worse, the room I'm teaching in has southern exposure, meaning that the
sun beats into the windows all day long--and those windows open a mere 8" at the bottom. Needless to say the classroom is extremely hot--sometimes as warm as 95 degrees. To add insult to injury, I have not been given a key to the faculty bathroom.

As a result, I've taken to dressing in a manner appropriate for the weather: collared shirts, knee-length shorts and sandals. Today I received a letter of reprimand from my principal which accuses me of dressing in an unprofessional matter.

The segment is being taped outside the school at 7:30 tomorrow morning. I don't know when it will air.

Oh pooh!! I thought you and Miss Barbra Streisand were going to appear together and sing "Before the Parade Passes By". What a great duet that would make.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I saw no humor in that last post.

(As far as I'm concerned, That Streisand Woman no longer exists!)

Dollypop on TV

I've served time as a teacher in a classroom with a southern exposure, windows that opened eight inches, and temps that reached 95 degrees or more. We had some working fans, but since the number was small, there was a lottery to see who would get them. I didn't feel lucky so I bought two big fans to enhance the chances of survival. The administrators had airconditioned offices and stayed in them, a fact that I think explains why we were not bothered about what we wore or didn't wear. No media people were interested in the heat-stroke prone students or teachers.
Give 'em hell in your TV appearance--I'm assuming that your appearance has to do with the reprimand and is not a chance to demonstrate your best buck and wing. Dollypop on TV

How foolish of me....The story is being done by EYEWITNESS NEWS. That's ABC and Channel 7 in the NYC area.

Good luck, DP. I am sure you will get some response to your plight. Keep us posted as to the day and time it will air on Channel 7. If I were you, I would break out in a Broadway song as I finished up my interview. re: Dollypop on TV

Having taught in a public school system for far too many years, there was a 'rule' (ahem) that when the thermometer in the classroom hit 90, school was to be dismissed. Haha, ask me how many times that happened. I totally relate.

re: Dollypop on TV

Ha! As a former NYC public school kid...I wish that were so! Man it used to get so bad in those classrooms. I don't even have a clue how I would deal with it now!

re: re: Dollypop on TV

Did I mention that the NYC teachers' contract has no dress code? That means we can wear virtually anything we want (Oh, if I could only get my hands on TGC's red Dolly gown!).

BTW: the principal's office is air-conditioned!

re: re: re: Dollypop on TV

LOL That would be great if you had Miss Channing's red gown. Then you could wear it on the news and blame heat-stroke.
It's ridiculous enough to have to work in those conditions, but then to be told how to dress as well! Give 'em Hell DP!
You'll probably be on tomorrow evening's news, if it's taping tomorrow?

re: re: re: re: Dollypop on TV

The taping was never done.

On the way to work his morning my dashboard "alert" light started flashing and I immediately called in sick and turned around to have an auto repair shop check my car's engine. I've had engine's seize in the past and didn't want to go through that again. It turned out that the engine's fine: it was the dashboard sensor that was at fault. (Take a deep breath and thank God!)

However, I did go to the UFT Headquarters and filed a grievance against this principal. It turns out he has a list of grievances against him longer than my arm. Working for him is a page out of Charles Dickens. (I didn't tell you that just before we left school yesterday [Wed] he told us he wants copies of next week's mid-terms on his desk on Friday. He also expects each exam to be at least 1 hr long! That means we'v had to put together 1 hour exams in less than 2 days!)

EYEWITNESS NEWS is interested in doing the story in a few days.

DOLLYPOP ON TV! Please mention my name! Pretty please! Make us proud, Dolly! *Scans for spelling errors*- All is well!

re: re: re: re: re: re: Dollypop on TV

I'm really glad to see that BillyLawlor is scanning his posts for spelling/grammar errors. Your Uncle Dollypop is very proud of you!

I'll do my best to mention your name when my story is re-scheduled. You may have to be one of my students, though.

For example: "This whole thing was witnessed by my student Billy Lawlor and a few others named Shaquanna, Tameeka, Monique, Tyrone, Shaneequa, Onteequa, Jamahl, Rufus and Crystal...somehow Billy Lawlor stood out from the rest!"

re: re: Dollypop on TV

The most memorable names I've encountered while teaching in the NYC Public Schools are: Precious, Sparkles, Infant and Infinite (twin boys), Twigg, Excellent, Ocean, Camry, Lexus, Champagne, and Pleasant. Up until this summer, my favorite name of all was "Richard J. Slappy" because that's exactly what I wanted to do to him. However, I currently have on my roles a young man named "Jha Jha Boston Curry". He has yet to materialize, but I can't keep a straight face when I call the role. The class chuckles as well.

re: re: re: Dollypop on TV

My brother's Latin teacher in high school used to have a kids name on his roster every year my brother was in school. His name was Rocco Lombardo. There was NEVER a kid by that name in his class. Nor did he materialize elsewhere in the school. The teacher would make up stories about how Rocco had cement shoes and was at the bottom of the East River. During the beginning of each school year, he would call the role...get to Rocco...and stop the class and say...yes, Rocco Lombardo is still dead.

For some reason, even to this day, my brother and I still laugh at that.

Sorry! It's the headache medicine!!!!

I wouldn't show up either! That's probably why he's enrolled in summer classes, he doesn't dare go during the school year either.

Infant and Infantile? That's really going to make a great name plaque for an up-and-coming lawyer. Or, can you imagine, a DOCTOR?
"Dr. Infantile Smith, neuro-surgeon". I don't THINK so.

I swear, people ought to have to pass a competnecy test before becoming parents. If that's how they name them, one can only imagine how they RAISE them. (Well, we pretty much see evidence of that pretty regularly on the late night news).

Sorry for being a judgemental and politically-incorrect old fart, but I really feel for these kids.

re: Dollypop on TV

Don't get me going on parents who play around with the kids names. I've taught a Forrest Green, Gene Kelly, Grace Kelly, Virginia Mayo, and right now I have Robin Williams and Vanessa Williams in the same class.
