I have to admit I love that song despite its silly lyrics, mostly because Donna’s vocals and the original production of the songreally sell it. Love to Love You Baby is neutered of all its original erotic electricity. I had half hoped the cast recording would make me rethink my disinterest in seeing the show, but sadly so far it’shaving the opposite effect. It’slike the creative team doesn’tunderstand what made Donna’s music special. Say what you will about On Your Feet, but I don’trecall a lot of criticism of the music itself. Of course, that show had the advantage of the Estefans being part of the creative team and not trying to distance themselves from their musical legacy which seems to have happened here. I suspect even if Donna was still alive, she too would have downplayedher musical eroticismin a trade off for religious uplift. It’s sad because I think Donna’s musical catalogue is deeper, vaster, more varied and better than Estefan’s."
The cast recording is missing the really cool sound effect during MacArthur Park. It’s like a thundering boom? Idk how else to describe it. But it gave me chills in the show.
Also- to whoever said Ariana sounded like Celine Dion... I hate you. That’s ALL I can hear now whenever she sings LOL it’s the oddest thing! I hadn’t noticed before. It’s really strong on Faster & Faster
I believe that somebody said this earlier, but a highlight of the album for me was the stripped down version of Dim All the Lights. It was really, really beautiful and I believe, did the song justice.

OMG. I’m relistening now and I totally hear Celine now. Lol.
I'll never pay money to see this show, but I do love listening to the B-roll montage online. The girls all sound terrific...and I really want that fringed blue dress that DeBose wears...
I will say this much: I like learning about music and find its evolution over the years especially interesting. That said, I had NO CLUE that Donna Summer was as "groundbreaking" or her music as "special" as I've since realized. As I was growing up in the 1990s, disco just sounded so dated to me. I was under the false impression that it was just churned out, so to speak, to be played in clubs...and that was it.
But between everything I've learned about D.S. from this show's material- not to mention the autotuned musical disasters of today- I now understand that disco had its place in the realm of significance and artistic quality.
