maybe they were going for the whole beyonce-surprise-release? lol
...this has to be the first time in modern Broadway that a cast album is dropped with like no PR surrounding it.

That’s because this particular show basically sucks.

But which sucks/sucked more is the question of the season. BUM SUMMER or ESCAPE TO PINA COLADA VILLE? And soooo many new show titles to be added to the list shortly.
Love your avatar CarlosAlberto.
I took a listen to a couple songs. This sounds dreadful - auto tuned and canned like crazy.
Where is it being sold? I can’t find it anywhere.

Gracias!
Jesse Green wrote that this musical was probably only in existence to promote the Greatest Hits album that came out a few months ago. Now, I have that album, and, listening to this recording, it looks like they literally took all the songs from the Greatest Hits, truncated them, and then got amazing performers to belt them to the rafters.

I'm IN LOVE with this OBC!
Summer's catalog is so perfect.
I will certainly fit this show in my schedule just because of these vocalists, with a rush price (of course), they're tremendous!
I agree with most posters on the board that the show as a whole was pretty “meh,” but I must admit that the vocals were outstanding and I’m glad that it was memorialized in this album (much like the Carousel revival, bad production, amazing vocals)
I don’t know what I am doing wrong. i can’t find it on itunes or Amazon, dont have Spotify. Will it be released on CD?

I don’t know about a physical CD or Amazon, but the album is definitely on Spotify and I’m almost positive I saw cast members posting pictures of the album on Apple Music. Maybe look up a certain cast member’s name?

Oy, this is a messy album.
The orchestrations are too electronic, even by Donna Summer standards, to the point where they sound like karaoke tracks on YouTube. I also agree the vocals are nice, but there are a lot of vocal flourishes that aren't true to Donna Summer's original track that throw it off.
Also, why the hell does Ariana DeBose since MacArthur Park like Celine Dion?

if you go to the itunes home page, it's the 3rd album on the NEW MUSIC section.
or you have to exactly type "summer: the donna summer musical" and youll see the tacky blue marquee picture pop up lol

and i guess i missed this when i saw it live, but i hear it on the recording... the intro to Pandora's Box is the piano melody from On My Honor? or am I imagining that?
the piano sounds like it does the "here i am, on my own again"

No, you’re exactly right. I thought for a second that it had turned into an On My Honor Reprise

haha ok good. I really do love these stripped down versions. But I agree some of the songs are way too techno sounding.

The CD is scheduled to be released on August 24.

I listened to the first seven songs and so far only song I think the production does justice to is MacArthur Park. I have to admit I love that song despite its silly lyrics, mostly because Donna’s vocals and the original production of the song really sell it. Love to Love You Baby is neutered of all its original erotic electricity. I had half hoped the cast recording would make me rethink my disinterest in seeing the show, but sadly so far it’s having the opposite effect. It’s like the creative team doesn’t understand what made Donna’s music special. Say what you will about On Your Feet, but I don’t recall a lot of criticism of the music itself. Of course, that show had the advantage of the Estefans being part of the creative team and not trying to distance themselves from their musical legacy which seems to have happened here. I suspect even if Donna was still alive, she too would have downplayed her musical eroticism in a trade off for religious uplift. It’s sad because I think Donna’s musical catalogue is deeper, vaster, more varied and better than Estefan’s.

The cast recording is missing the really cool sound effect during MacArthur Park. It’s like a thundering boom? Idk how else to describe it. But it gave me chills in the show.
Also- to whoever said Ariana sounded like Celine Dion... I hate you. That’s ALL I can hear now whenever she sings LOL it’s the oddest thing! I hadn’t noticed before. It’s really strong on Faster & Faster
