"out of touch and nasty to no real purpose."
Funny, that's exactly my take on Riedel.
Musto demonstrates a sense of humor about himself and has no problem being the butt of jokes. I also feel as if he has become much less inclined to kick somebody when they're down than he used to be. Now, this could all be my sense that I gleaned from pretty much not missing a column since he started.
I am curious what you think he's out of touch with?

We agree entirely on Riedel.
If Musto had such a sense of humor about himself, I don't think he would have wasted column inches on DCB. That was just petty bitchery.
I think he's out of touch with theater, for starters, but then again, I'm not sure he ever was in touch with that.
In a recent column, Michael Musto apologized to Juliet Mills/Maxwelll Caulfield for being so critical of their difference in ages (when they first got married). He admitted he was wrong. On a side note, M.M. was nice to me when I first visited NYC in 2006. We met up at this club called "Happy Valley, located at 14 East 27th. I met up with him at around midnite, outside of the club. I was nervous, to say the least. He was very nice and pleasant. Musto had a pad handy, ready to write this and that. People kept going up to him and saying hello. I did meet one celebrity who had a hit show at the time...about a group of gay guys who did do-overs of straight men (home, personal grooming, etc.) It was a blast. With M.M., you know who you are dealing with. He's insightful about many things and peppers his comments with a dash of snark and wit. He's an o.k. guy. I don't know much about Riedel, except people either love him or hate him with a passion. Someone mentioned that he could be a Republican....perhaps of the Log Cabin variety? from RC in Austin, Texas

I know I am belaboring the point, but the DCB thing is a blog post and not column inches and he's kind of the butt of the punchline.

I did consider the fact that "column inches" wasn't literally accurate, but he's still needing to produce a certain amount of words, regardless of where they appear.
I disagree that Musto presents himself as the butt of the joke, and the few comments that are there so far seem to be of the "Yay, Musto, you told him!".
Musto used to be in the fray. He was relevant and in the scene and was a good reporter. Now he tends to do this Kathy Griffin D-list thing and acts like no one wants him around. He will write about anything. He's very slapdash and sloppy.
He strikes me as slovenly and looks like he is unkempt, but that is just my opinion.
