I'd love to see a little show by a White Supremacist Group, or a Tribe of Black Isrealites or the Militant Jews for Jesus. It's America for Cry Sakes. Free speech? Hello? And plus it sure as hell wouldn't be boring like half the other crap on the boards right now. I just hope Dr. Laura's show is a musical.
And Lildogs, I am only old and tired because I went dancing last night till 5 am at the Roxy.

Posted: 9/4/05 at 12:11pmOh, I believe in free speech. Her free speech to do her show. My free speech to protest her either in person or on a message board.

Music was pretty good. But I think there is a LOT of Jersey trash in town right now. You might want to warn your boyfriend for Allegria (which I will not be attending this year). Way too many stubbly chests on the dance floor.
Oh protest Dr. Laura all you want. Generally, I find most people protest without having actually listened to the show. I've listened a couple of times and never heard her mention homos once. Usually she's just yelling at white trash who have five kids out of wedlock and then royally screw them over. But it's America -- why bother raising kids when the bandwagon is rolling by...

Well, I HAVE heard her comments on gays, and therefore, bandwagon or not, I file her in the bigot column. And seeing how she has influence on people, I think she is worthy of protestation.
I'm just curious why a gay man feels the need to stand up for her. Fine if you think politics is dull and blase when there's dancing and men to do, but why stick up for a women who thinks you are sick and going to hell?
#30re: Dr. Laura is doing a show everyone!!!
Posted: 9/4/05 at 12:20pmIf I don't think I'm sick or going to hell, why should I care what she thinks? I think she could use a good face lift, but she's not listening to me either. And yeah she may have influence, but I don't generally run in the same circles as her listeners, so I haven't had much of a problem...

Posted: 9/4/05 at 12:23pmMB, you have a point about people who protest without hearing her show. I would imagine, however, if one has the time and energy to protest anything, one would have done his homework. For some reason, I keep thinking of those guys who wear the robes and the headpieces and rant about "whitey" in Herald or Times Square. Not that I think "whitey" shouldn't be protested, but c'mon, if you have the time and resources to protest a theatre performance or a movie or some abstract enemy, how bad can your life be?

But her listeners vote on matters that include your civil rights in this country. And, why would people give you equal rights when they've been told by DR. Laura that you have a disease? And, if you are diseased, why should someone not feel it ok to beat up gay people?
But, who cares about rights and gay bashings? We've got disco and men to ogle!

My only problem with groups that jump on the proverbial protest soap box is that usually they aren't well informed. Using Dr. Laura just as an example, I could probably ask ten gay men -- "What do you think of Dr. Laura?" and 9/10 would say "I hate her, she's evil, she' the spawn of Satan." Pick your quote.
But 7/10 would also admit to having never listened to her show, or to knowing what she's actually said about homosexuality. Merely joining popular opinion within the demograph.
I'm not saying JRB is one of these people. If he's heard her spout vitriolic things about homos, then clearly he's entitled to feel offended.
I'm just saying, listening to her show the few times I have, she's never mentioned anything about homosexuality. She seems more concerned about not screwing out of wedlock and things like that. You can still disagree with her opinions. But I don't consider her akin to something like the 700 club which states over and over a negative agenda towards gays.
And JRB -- you can take a political interest AND ogle men at the Roxy. It's not one or the other! And frankly, if I have to pick my battles, Dr. Laura is going to be low on the conquer and destroy list.

Posted: 9/4/05 at 12:32pmWell, MB, I would be interested in knowing how many times someone can bash gays on a radio or TV show and still be okie dokie. 5? 30? Just so it's not weekly?
#35re: Dr. Laura is doing a show everyone!!!

I don't think a thread on BWW is equal to "conquer and destroy".
And, trust me--as political as I am, I find time to ogle guys.
#36re: Dr. Laura is doing a show everyone!!!
Posted: 9/4/05 at 12:36pmWhat would you suggest then JRB? Taking people off the air for stating their opinion? There are, for the record, FAR more very liberal talk shows on radio and television then far right, like Dr. Laura and Rush Limbaugh...

I think the sticking point with this is her choice of venues. It's like holding an Holocaust Memorial at Bob Jones Univeristy. One could infer, however, that she chose SF for the controversy it would spark and hopefully sell tickets. She's been off the public radar for a while and I can't imagine that even her fans would be in line for that dreck. She's trying to make a buck I'm sure.
And jrb, you know you like to party and look at boys--I know for a fact Miss McGreevey has been out partying! So you can be political and give head on the balcony at the same time...oh! i mean...
#38re: Dr. Laura is doing a show everyone!!!
Posted: 9/4/05 at 12:41pmI still think Dr. Laura's show should be a musical. How hot would it be if she did a club set at the Roxy??? Zowie!

Actually radio is mostly conservative. That's why Air America was created.
My suggestion on what to do with people like Pat Robertson and Dr. Laura is the same for what to do with people who would bash blacks and Jews on TV or radio. And, what do you think that would be? Do you think that racism would be tolerated? So why should gay bashing? Oh, I know it's a fine line--religious views, etc. Why DO certain religious people obsess over something that is not the focus of the Bible anyway?
#40re: Dr. Laura is doing a show everyone!!!
Posted: 9/4/05 at 12:43pmI'm just not a very politically correct person. Life is a lot more enjoyable when we don't have to rewrite the script to ANNIE GET YOUR GUN to not offend the two American Indians who have ever seen the show.

lil dogs--my earlier comments were aimed at the mentality too many gay men have. If the gay community put as much energy and money into fighting for their civil rights as they do trying to be pretty and to get off, we'd be equal citizens by now.
Well good, MB. Then you won't mind if I start a TV show that promotes slavery? I think it would be a great idea if people of color were in chains and forced to work on my farm again. That's where they belong. And you certainly will support my views on this because it doesn't matter if it's politically correct or not. And if people of color start being slaves again, I won't be liable to you because I was just speaking my politically incorrect opinion. Thanks!

Rush in NY and Dr. Laura in San Fran...wtf!
I say Harvey Firestein and Rosie O' Donnel do a show in Topeka...

Posted: 9/4/05 at 12:51pmJRB -- if anything, it will be white people in slavery. We are going to be the minority in about five minutes. Hows that for politically incorrect. I understand your points, but I think part of winning civil rights is putting energy into political events that actually making a difference. We as gay men waste too much time on things like Dr. Laura in my opinion. Updated On: 9/4/05 at 12:51 PM

Who is the "we" of which you speak, Michael? Or do you mean white like you? Geez...
And jrb, i know we spend too much time on shallow nonsense.
MB: I think those that fight people like Dr. Laura get at least a small amount of satisfaction because shutting her down is a realistic goal--it can be done. I think alot in the LGBT community feel so marginalized that any victory is step forward. And it's much easier to run her out of town than to change centuries of social conditioning, which is what the ultimate goal is--for me at least.

I'm only going to speak on what I've HEARD, because I haven't heard any of the gaybashing either.
First off, I don't like how she uses any opportunity to plug her books or give herself kudos. I understand everyone has to do that to a certain extent but she seems to go a little overboard with it.
I REALLY don't like how, for the longest time, she talked about her conversion to Judaism and her love for the religion - and then all of a sudden, after YEARS of talking about it, she drops it and decides she's not Jewish anymore. I was too disgusted to really tune in and find out the whole story so if I'm wrong on this please let me know. I was always confused by this to begin with cause she considered herself orthodox but I don't think she went through an orthodox conversion... I don't know. Please school me on this one cause that just made her seem like the biggest hypocrite to me.
Also, I think she's very quick to give advice and with no mercy...sometimes too harsh and judgmental without giving any consideration to the caller's individual circumstance. It's almost like she treats the calls like a formula: "You are in this situation, you need to do X, Y, and Z to get out". It's not always that easy or simple.
With all this said - I do think there are many things such as her support of kids coming first no matter what that I enjoy hearing her opinion on. I have no problem listening to her tell off dead beat parents to do right by their kids.
She's not perfect but I don't think she's the spawn of satan.

Personally, I would group her with Judge Judy and Dr. Phil. All of them, in slightly different ways, think that the best way to deal with people is to shout simplistic slogans at them.
I do find her choice of locale disturbing. Perhaps she (and Rush Limbaugh on the other coast) are hoping that there is a silent conservative movement burgeoning even in such liberal strongholds as New York and San Francisco, and that this show will cause them to rise and conquer. It's certainly more challening than preaching to the choir.
