The Variety review of this was almost exactly what I posted several weeks ago. Amazing how much I was chewed up (especially since I was involved in the original reading of this show). This show is just potty humor with generic music - good riddance.

This is really sad... It was such a great show! Jen Simard was phenominal!

I saw a reading of the show at the Theatre Building Chicago Stages festival and the Bailiwick full production. Not the greatest musical of all time, but entertaining enough if you're in the right mood. I was more put back that a standard issue perky blonde robogypsy was cast as Clara in the Bailiwick production instead of Jennifer Connelly (no relation to the movie star), the actress who did the TBC reading, who is a great talent (and probably made the show more entertaining for me). It was even more annoying that said robogypsy won a Jeff Citation for the show.

Which leads me to ask--was Jennifer Simard another perky ditz in the show or was she a sexier Clara?

Fifteen years ago, a show TBC developed called "A Change in the Heir" was a huge hit for them (when they still did full productions of shows) and then bombed on Broadway. It still looks like what looks great in Chicago doesn't look great in New York--at least when it comes to new musicals.

interesting - I was in the reading with Jennifer - she was terrific. I just find it amusing that people are calling this a great show when every and I mean EVERY member of that original STAGES cast thought it was one of the worst things we had ever had to do. (and before anyone jumps on me about the evolution of the Chicago production - the staged Chicago version was EXACTLY the same - word for word - note for note).

If these new actors are as good as people are saying, I believe it's a blessing in disguise that this is closing soon and am sure that they will move on to better and brighter things.

Good luck to all of them.

as NYtheatre.com
Know it alls like you are NOT like on pages like this!
Also....The AP newswire review....town and village...
it received an equal amount of good and bad.
i think they're PROBABLY MORE QUALIFIED THAN U!
DON'T YOU AGREE?

why is it once someone comes on these boards with actual knowledge - they are crucified. Seriously? I only post on here about things I know about - NOT things I wish I could do. But God forbid someone spoil all of your little fantasies.

Get a grip - I was in the damn show......that doesn't make me a 'know it all' - it makes me someone with inside knowledge. As for not being liked on a piddly little message board....- I think I'll be able to sleep tonight and for the rest of my life - but thanks for the chuckle anyhow.

also ...oh wise chitown( original cast reading member of the show..)
as we've heard so many times....blah blah blah
How come your own city of Chicago awarded Dr. sex....
the best new musical>????
Your opinions are noted, comparing yourself to intellectual
theatre reviewers is absurd.

and by the way.
The NYC show was a altogether different script,
had much more music...so comparing the two shows and
the time difference is ridiculous.....
Your know it all attitude is so chicago....and so
small town.

and you're just a mean spirited theatre fan.

I don't think legitimizing a comment on a show with credentials is a negative thing. But god forbid we back up what we say on these boards - let's all just dream and pretend we know what we're talking about and voice opinions with zero background knowledge. That's fun.

I was involved in the production - I stayed in contact with many members who continued to stay involved - including the creative team. I hated the show - most of them hated the show. Dumb comedy almost always sells in Chitown - I'm not proud of it. But I can't tell others what to like - and I haven't done it here. Re-read my posts before you jump on me.

Chicago is a small town? Have you been here? God, what an ignorant statement.

And yes - I'm aware that they changed some of the script - though I've read much on the production and know that it is INDEED very similar to the original.

Wow, you are a raging idiot - or someone who is clearly involved in the NY production.

Ok fool....
now you just point out how stupid you really are.
Your first hand knowledge> ok?...is of a non equity performer in
chicago....of a entirely different production.
You think you so smart when you say that YOU were a part of this production, and that you keep close contact with the creative team???
WEll....I AM PART of that creative team fool.
do you know who I am?
Guess not chitown...?
I'd love to know exactly what smart ass i'm
talking to>
otherwise shut it....because this NY original creative team
member has had it with your bs.

I enjoyed the talented Jen Simard.
It was a lot of fun. The highlight was Jen's number the Doctor's Wife.
For what it is worth, I hope someone big hires Jen Simard.
She deserves the biggest and best show on Broadway.
Jen deserves it.
Broadway or Off Broadway, Jen is a talented performer!

The show, Chitown, is a lot of fun. It was full of some good laughs and just a nice way to escape from all the drama of daily life. If people go into this expecting KINSEY, they'll walk out unhappy. THAT is the problem.

This is all too funny Mickey. If you are truly a member of the creative team and getting in such a huff over someone's rightful opinion you should be ashamed of yourself. Also, if you are a member of the creative team and you think Chicago is such a "small town" as you put it, then why did you have to use it to give your musical wings? Interesting that you are so hard on the city of Chicago when it embraced your, dare I say, childish musical and NY closed it early.....hmmmm.

As a sidenote, I agree with the praise everyone is giving Jen. She's wonderful!

Jen could make poop look good.
Sorry, but its true.
She was the best thing about Dr Sex.
And Dr Sex was entertaining, not poop, but Jen shines in everything she does.

Hi everybody, I'm Molly. I was lucky enough to be a cast member in the Chicago cast of Dr Sex, and of the readings in NYC. For anyone who is reading this, you may or may not know how brilliant the composer Larry, and his partner Sally are. I hope you get a chance to find out what loving, generous people they are as well. I can tell you that being involved in this show was a life changing experience for me, and it is sad to see the gorgeous memories tarnished by the anger and resentment displayed on this message board. Let's keep the peace--there's so little of it these days. XOXO
