I think it's about time to talk about my personal favorite NY Theatre award. I've always found the Drama Desks to be far less predictable than the Tonys, mostly due to the fact that it includes all NY theatre rather than just Broadway. This year will be especially interesting due to the fact that Hamilton will not be eligible, so all the other shows will be battling it out. So my questions are:
1. Which musical will take home the big prize, as well as the other major musical awards that would otherwise go to Hamilton this year?
(I have no idea who will win best musical, but I think Direction might go to John Doyle or one of the other revival directors)
2. Which off-Broadway shows do you think are contenders for nominations?
3. Which Off-Broadway shows would you personally like to see get recognized?
4. Which shows are contenders for Unique Theatrical Experience?
5. Who will the music/lyrics awards go to? Do you think they will go to different shows?
6. Which Tony contenders might get left out of the Drama Desks due to the competition against Non-Broadway shows?
Personally, I'd love to see the following shows get recognized (I'm not necessarily saying they will):
--Futurity (Music, Set Design, Direction)
--Smokefall (Play, Direction, Featured Actress - Taylor Richardson)
--Dot (Play)
--Invisible Thread (Music, Direction)
--Incident at Vichy (Revival of a Play)
--The Robber Bridegroom (Revival of a Musical, Direction)
--First Daughter Suite (Featured Actress - Rachel Bay Jones, Mary Testa, Alison Fraser, Caissey Levy)
--Henry IV (Revival of a Play, Direction, Featured Actress - Jade Anouka and/or Sophie Stanton)
--Nice Fish (Leading Actor - Mark Rylance)
--Broadway and the Bard (Outstanding Revue)
These are shows that I didn't/haven't seen, but could get some nominations based on what I've heard:
--Dear Evan Hansen
--A Streetcar Named Desire (St. Ann's)
--King and Country: Shakespeare’s Great Cycle of Kings (BAM)
--Lazarus
