If Sally & Phyllis were cast in the older end of the age spectrum, I think Bill Irwin could play Buddy.

I just wonder how much older they can be made, without it being distorted on film. Unless they cast actresses in their sixties and make the reunion take place in 81 instead of 71.

My current dream cast

Phyllis - Vanessa Williams
Ben - Alec Baldwin
Buddy - Matthew Broderick
Sally - This one is always tough for me, because until her death, I wanted Natasha Richardson to play this role so bad. I don't know she'd handle the singing - and I'm not down on dubbing unless it's a voice that doesn't gel with the actor - but maybe Mary Louise Parker?


ETA - Anne Hathaway as Young Heidi would be total waste. Anne Hathaway as Young Sally on the other hand.... Updated On: 12/19/10 at 10:34 AM

I know I've read that there was a version planned in the 70s with names like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Anybody know that? I know I'm not dreaming.

I think that's what SeanMartin was talking about. I've never been able to get my hands on the screenplay, but others have read it. I believe the locale was changed to a movie studio and that the Follies of the show became the Hollywood Muiscals of the 30s and early 40s.

the real question when talking about a Follies movie is who would direct it. I know I'll get flack for this but I think this is right up Rob Marshall's alley. His movies always blend the line between what's going on in reality and the character's mind which is the approach Follies needs. Nine not so much...

And if he could hold back on the quick cuts and music video tricks Baz Luhrman would be an interesting choice. He certainly could bring the theatrical fireworks for the follies sequences.

Wouldn't it be awesome if those two pulled a Jerome Robbins/Robert Wise and double teamed it?

Phyllis: I should have said his movie musicals. What I meant was that I thought the songs as an inner monolouge approach worked well for Chicago. I didn't like it as much when applied to Nine. Just my oppinion.
