Dream Cast Jessie Mueller!

I think Jessie is such a brilliant and versatile actor! She's one of the best we have so what roles would you like to see her play?

Fanny Brice - Funny Girl

Eliza Doolittle - My Fair Lady

Amalia - She Loves Me

Mrs. Lovett - Sweeney Todd

Maria Von Trapp - The Sound of Music (even though she's probably to old)

Annie Oakley - Annie Get Your Gun

Charity - Sweet Charity

Mame - Mame

How is she too old to play Maria von Trapp and yet you've dream-casted her as Mame and Mrs. Lovett? Mary Martin was in her late forties when she played Maria, and Angela Lansbury was 41 and 54 when she played the other two.

"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."

I don't think she's to old, but they seem to cast maria younger and younger nowadays. Like Benanti who was 19 when she replaced Luker in the last revival, or Kerstin Anderson (I think she's 20?), who's playing the role on tour. I would actually love to see an older girl to play the role so its not like a young girl marrying an old ass man with 6 kids. They seem to do that stuff today. Im happy its not like that with the She Loves Me revival.

I need to see her in something else because I was not moved by her performance in Into the Woods at all, but everyone on this board just goes on and on and on about her ad nauseum so I must have missed something.

You do realize that Maria's husband was 25 years older then her, don't you? It may seem like she's marrying an "old ass man", but when she married at age 22, her husband was 47. It may seem wrong to you, but casting a young actress against a middle aged actor is faithful to the story.

And an "older girl" is a woman. An adult female is not a girl; neither is Jessie Mueller. She's a 32 year old woman.

Does it even say those ages in the show?

I can agree to this. I thought Jessie's performance in Beautiful was wonderful but I don't think she is the answer to the theater Gods prayers, like she is being hyped up to be. Her Cinderella left me completely cold (as did the whole production). I'm excited to see what she does in Waitress. I hope it's completely different from her work in Beautiful.

It's heavily implied that there is a significant difference in age, simply because Maria is a young postulant and Captain von Trapp is a widower with seven kids--including one that is already 16. Most parents of 16 year old children aren't 30 and most postulants aren't 35. The Captain is also supposed to be high ranking and well regarded military leader, something you wouldn't expect at a young age.

If Jessie Mueller were to be Maria, you'd need an older captain for it to believable. I love Rebecca Luker, but even when I saw the show when I was 11 or so, she struck me as too old to be someone who wasn't even a young nun yet.

One thing you have to understand is, the stage is more forgiving than film when it comes to casting actors or actresses in roles that are technically supposed to be young.

I mean when Glenn Close played Nellie Forbush in the TV "South Pacific" she was not right age at all. Nellie is supposed to be someone who is like fresh out of nursing school and very young.

Yes--and it also says in the script that you're an idiot.

I'm glad Fanny was first on OP list. She's my first choice if they do get the revival together. She did Cinderella but would love to see her do the Baker's wife. Narrator in Joseph. Definitely Elizabeth in Young Frankenstein.
