Dreamgirls Pictorial Book

Hi everyone. I'm back from a breif vacation. Upon my return, I recieved an interesting package from Amazon.com. In it was the long awaited Dreamgirls Pictorial Book that I ordered back in December. It's nice. No screenplay, but some nice photos and essays. Martin Gottfried's introductory essay was quite interesting, though I find the information about Michael Bennett and Bernie Jacob's experiment with pot a little uncalled for. It had nothing to do with Dreamgirls. Mr. Gottfried does have the habit of overexposing his subjects as we can plainly see in his Bob Fosse biography, which is quite good actually. The costumes sketches and storyboards are beautiful. I feel the film deserved Oscars for both, but the accademy did not obviously. This book makes me quite exited for the DVD next month! I can't wait!

(And one more thing- I loved the snapshot of the Imperial marquee back on opening night in 1981. Looked like quite an event from the crowd outside.)

Anyone else have any opinions or links to threads about this already? I didn't bother searching, I'm tired. My flight was delayed.

Received my book today as well.
I was quite surprised that the heavier "Effie" silhouette was on the front cover but her skinnier counterpart remianed on the Collectors Program I received today as well.
Thumbed thru the pics but haven't sat down to read it. I'll make time for it tomorrow. The pics are beautiful. Am also excited to get this on DVD next month but WTF took them so long to get this book out?

Chicago took a long time too. That book, while having the screenplay, had two very bad production photographs of the original production. (Sadly, there aren't many good ones of the original) What's nice about this book is that there are quite a few as well as some behind the scene shots (Bennett at the press rehearsal, etc.) as well as the nice essay by Gottfried.

I also noticed that they incorrectly identified replacement "Michelle" Terry Burrell as Deborah Burrell (who originated the role) in both the pictorial book and the collector's program.

Terry is much taller and (I mean this in the most sincere way) gawkier than her shortier sister Deborah. I noticed this right off.

The pics of the OBC are quite beautiful especially the infamous "Legs" logo and that pic from "One Night Only"...Sheryl Lee Ralph was so luscious (well, she still is)!

Just got my copy this week, too.

First, a rave: the book is beautiful and I can't wait to spend some time looking through it this weekend.

OK, now my rant: WHY was this so delayed? I'm not sure what's up with this publisher. It's the same one that did the CHICAGO book, which, as previously mentioned, was significantly delayed (but not as long as the DREAMGIRLS book). I'm generally not one to get snippy, but they need to get their act together. Two for two is not good. The hype and excitement around the movie has died down significantly in the intervening months, which can't help book sales.

I hope they're not doing the HAIRSPRAY book! re: Dreamgirls Pictorial Book

re: Dreamgirls Pictorial Book

Wait a second- the screenplay is NOT in the book? The blurb on Amazon.ca had said it WAS included when I ordered mine back in Dec- when it was supposed to be released. Do I need to cancel my order? I wanted to read Condon's work more than look at pretty pictures. Hmmmph

re: Dreamgirls Pictorial Book

The delay in the book was simply rights issues concerning the Supremes album/LP covers which were recreated for the film. They were permitted for the film, but not for inclusion in the book. The publishers wanted to includ all of them in the book, which is a major reason for the hold-up.

Also, Berry Gordy Jr. wanted the location of his photo in the book changed so not imply that Curtis Taylor Jr. is a direct copy of him, etc.

The publishers are issuing the screenplay in it's own book form, which is why it was announced several months ago that it would not be included in this new pictorial book.
