I'm sure Anika and Sharon are great. What I'm already gathering (so far) from the chat/thread comments is that there is a LOT to take in here. People are focusing on the more obvious plot, song and character elements to discuss. Lorrell and Michele are definitely supporting characters... it's just funny that most haven't mentioned them yet... and they're the other Dreamgirls. I'm wondering if the removal of "Ain't No Party" has something to do with it, as far as Anika. I know they added a duet for her and Eddie Murphy in its place.

(I almost don't want to hear the answer to that... I'd rather wait and see for myself how it's played out.)

What does Loretta Devine get to do in this?

b12b - It's sad if Anika gets overlooked though - she deserves some break.

I still wish she recorded Ain't No Party as a bonus track for the soundtrack, just to hear her sing it.

The "I gotta show to do" part sound fantastic. Nice little amuse-bouche of Anika.

I would wait and see what Loretta Devine does, rather than look for an answer.

It's kind of a "spoiler" to explain it.

Ah. Well, I wouldn't mind being spoiled (hell, I like to know who lives at the end of a horror movie!)....PM me, or whatever.

A new review has popped up on Ain't It Cool.

"Anika Noni Rose is a scene stealing fiend. Keep your eyes open, you will love her."

DREAMGIRLS IS "TESTING THROUGH THE ROOF"!!!

San Diego's screening on Thursday night was the 2nd Test Screening of the film and like the previous "test screening" audiences are reacting to this film in a manner rarely seen at these type of "edit in progress" previews!

The 3 reviews at AintItCoolNews.com, the review at PerezHilton.com, and the handful of reviews on the IMDB "Dreamgirls" board is testimony to the brilliance of Bill Condon!

Every element of this film, from direction to costume design to cinematography to musical score to the performances by the cast is recieving "rave" reviews from those lucky enough to see it.

After reading these early reports it's becoming very clear that Jennifer Hudson's performance as Effie is THE highlight of the film and will no doubt recieve much attention during the Award Season. Her performance could very well end up being the most talked about screen debuts in years!

Keep your eyes open for Test Screening #3 sometime in the near future!

"Dreamgirls" opens in theaters on Dec 21st. (Dec 20th is the 25th Year Anniversary of the opening night on Broadway!) There may be special advance screenings in NYC in December prior to the release date.

The NEW "Fall Movie Preview" issue of Entertainment Weekly features "Dreamgirls" on pages 92-93. Anika Noni Rose has a full page profile/picture on page 99. On page 106-107 "Dreamgirls" is picked as one of the potential Oscar Winners for Best Picture!

Wait a minute...

They cut "Ain't No PArty?????????

I was so looking forward to Anika singing that!

Dammit!!!

I love Loretta Devine's version and all (because I LOVE me some Loretta Devine), but I wanna hear it sung different (and not straining like Heather Headley's horrid rendition)

Oh well...

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Oh boy. I WANT this movie to be good. When I was a child, seeing a touring company of Dreamgirls was my first encounter with professional theater.

But I get suspicious when people say that something is "testing through the roof." Those words have been said about too many movies that turned out to be artistic and commercial duds.

Hi TennesseeTwang, I get what you mean when you become suspicious about the "testing through the roof" statement as it often is just studio buzz (without the reviews to back it up).

If you check the many "reports" at the various websites listed above you'll see there is an across the board enthusiasm for this film that goes beyond what most movies generate. When is the last time you heard preview audiences were cheering, applauding (and in a few cases giving standing ovations) DURING a film?

Without question Dreamworks is very confident with "Dreamgirls" and knew that these early Test Screenings would generate postive "buzz" around the internet, etc. "Testing through the roof" was my quote...for which Dreamworks is probably most grateful, hehe
