But Henry Goodman can sing and dance. He just wasn't doing it to the laughs that Brooks expected...

Has to be a record. Two lead actors for the same show canned because they could not do the role. Methinks people should check these things before announcing this or that person will star

Of course he can. He's not the Brent Barrett type of singer, but he can hit every note as well as the back of the house.

re: Dreyfuss Admitts: Cant's Sing or Dance

To compare Lane's stage talent to Dreyfuss is a joke. Dreyfuss is a talented actor in his own right but not a musical comedy vet...Lane has anchored many shows and seems to handle the singing just fine. He is not Robert Goulet in his prime but then that's not the kind of role he plays either.

And, as was pointed out in the other thread on this topic, we can talk money all day but Lane doesn't NEED it and isn't driven by it. He's driven by work on the stage and answered the call. Those of us who don't have the money can dream about it and imagine that it is the be all and end all, but that isn't really what this is about nor is it about being able to brag about doing this on the London stage.

It's about yet another Brooks short sighed casting call. And he's just lucky he has people to bail him out

I still disagree on the money aspect. How much money do we think a mainly Broadway actor has? The opportunity to make that much money in that short a period of time would be an incentive for most anyone. We're not talking about Jim Carrey or Tom Cruise or Oprah here. And if that's a major reason for his decision no one should fault him for it.

I agree Rat..

Nathan is, at this point, doing it for the quick money. Although I'm sure he loves the show. However, if he did, why doesn't he come back to Broadway where he is a bigger known star?

Besides money, I think he is trying to widen his fan base. We know that B Peter's is a hit in England and that's help her international career. Lane could use some wider publicity.

I think Lanes decision has nothing to do with money. It seems very clear that Brooks twisted his arm, knowing full well Lane was the ONLY person who could step into the role when Dreyfuss bowed out on such short notice. He did not want to let Mel or the other actors in the cast down.

And I frankly think Nathan may be a bit sick of the show. He is grateful for its sucess but doesn't want to be trapped in it. He wants to do other shows and is anxious to bring BUTLEY to Broadway. He doesn't want THE PRODUCERS to be his HELLO, DOLLY.

I have to agree Master. Those who follow his career know that he has said he is grateful for this show but also concerned about being pigeon holed as a slapstick musical comedy star when he would like to go back and do some drama again, etc.

As has been said here previously, he stated in January of this year when he returned to the Producers for the 2nd short run that it was his intention to use the money to invest in riskier more experimental productions, and he did so with the Frogs.

And perhaps that's exactly the explanation here.

I'm not going to get into this, as I feel everything has been covered that I would say.

However - I wanted to add, to midtowngym, that Susan's husband passed away right around the time that The Producers go started. Didn't know if you knew that or not...
Is she seeing anyone now? It was such a tragic event, and I'm sure it took its toll on her emotionally.

Roger Moore was supposed to play George, the other male lead in A. Lloyd Webber's "ASPECTS OF LOVE" but left during rehearsals admitting openly himself that his singing wasn't good enough.

So Richard D. is not the first one.

re: Dreyfuss Admitts: Cant's Sing or Dance

This show seems to have problems everwhere during lengthy runs everwhere outside of New York. The Los Angeles run even with Jason Alexander and Martin Short flagged early in its run, the Toronto production closed early and now the Melbourne production is closing 3 1/2 months early. Will the show fare better in London? What are your thoughts Broadwayworlders?

re: Dreyfuss Admitts: Cant's Sing or Dance

Sant: No, Richard D is not the first one but in his case he said this BEFORE he ever stepped onto the stage for rehearsals. He said it when they first announced his role months and months ago. AND, had a 'trial run' of physical endurance in Sly Fox, proved also that he has problems physically and probably couldn't do a demanding role like Max. This is different than someone getting in and THEN realizing there is a problem (ala Henry Goodman).

Dreyfuss AND Brooks are both to blame for this. Hopefully the London run will recover and Londoners will get a chance to see a great show.

re: Dreyfuss Admitts: Cant's Sing or Dance

Mr Roxy - other lead actors 'canned'. Remember 'Sunset'? Faye never played the role - Patti never got to Broadway with it and she was wonderful in the role. The Dreyfuss things resembles the Faye episode more....A lot of people are at fault in situations like this. Certainly Dreyfuss if he had doubts about his ability and a BIG mistake by Brooks for casting him without being certain.

Still, I am pleased that I'll be seeing Nathan on Thursday. I've always wanted to see him on stage and so this is a great oportunity. Although it will still be in preview we had real trouble getting tickets. Funnily enough, when I called for tickets, the Box Office asked if I knew that Dreyfuss was no longer appearing and when I said I did, they said that's what the response had been from everyone who'd called that day. Seems they'd definitely had increased interest.
