I guess this puts another kabosh on the theory that "Mel Brooks can't do anything wrong". :)

What I don't understand is...the U.K. is supposedly full of actors well-versed in the music hall tradition who could have theoretically done a bang-up job in the role. Where wre they?

Master, the key word there is theoretically. And Simon Russell Beale will be busy playing Macbeth at the Almeida early next year, with the incredible Emma Fielding as his lady. You should fly over and see THAT.

Dreyfuss just wanted a another opportunity to show how multidimensionally talented he is! Seriously, the show needs a dynamo to put it across, you need some seriously "name " talent to make the $$ they need for this show to succede. It really is not as strongly written as Mr Brooks would like to beleive.

a) Dreyfuss sat in an audience and made an offhanded remark

b) Brooks took it to the bank as he did with Nicole Kidman after it was casually suggested she do Ulla in the movie

c) Brooks totally misjudged the casting error and Dreyfuss went along with it (in spite of saying he KNEW he couldn't do it)

d) Stroman may be the director and has some say on casting but when Mel speaks...

...and all of that equals disaster.

There ARE any number of English actors who could do this role and would have the following in the theater audience to bring them $$$...Mel couldn't find them

Now...Lane has the uphill climb to get ready for previews in 4 days. And they have to pay both Dreyfuss AND LANE thereby ensuring that the show will NEVER recoup.

Meantime, Dreyfuss (who IS injured...but couldn't do the part even if he weren't injured) gleefully talks about how much he sucked.

Is this a nightmare, a bad joke or just Mel's version of musical theater?

i'm sure he'll relish it--and chew the opportunity to pieces, just like he chews scenery! Wouldn't you like $100,000/wk to 'save the day' with your talent?

Brooke is selling tickets, though. And she may not be a "major talent", but she's a pro who knows her limitations. She just doesn't BLAB about them to the press in the Dreyfuss manner!
