Last night as I was trying to sleep, I started thinking "What would be the appropriate drink for various musicals. Of course, I started with Sondheim. Other suggestions? How about Kander & Ebb or ALW?
SATURDAY NIGHT - college beer like Lucky Lager
WEST SIDE STORY - Puerto Rican rum and Coca-Cola
GYPSY - fancy French champagne
FORUM - Roman wine
ANYONE CAN WHISTLE - Evian water (comes from a pipe, sounds French and is "naive" spelled backwards)
DO I HEAR A WALTZ? - Venetian spritz
COMPANY - Ice cold, dry martini. Alternates: vodka stinger or warm orange juice
FOLLIES - Champagne cocktail (using an old recipe)
A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC - champagne and strawberries (but NOT your best champagne)
PACIFIC OVERTURES - Tea
THE FROGS - Greek wine, of course (The lead IS Dionysus!)
SWEENEY TODD - London gin
MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG - Gin & tonic, presented with a twist
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE - More beer!
INTO THE WOODS - Hard apple cider
ASSASSINS - a shot
PASSION - bitters
ROAD SHOW - mislabeled booze served with an umbrella

Good pick for Assassins, but I have to say—a shot is clearly Hamilton territory.

Only problem with anything fancy and Company is that you would want to do a spit take kinda thing during Ladies Who Lunch. Maybe you could have two glasses.

Jarethan - it's called a stein. The old ones are an art form due to their sculpting and painting.

Thanks. I think I went brain-dead. I thought only those pottery things were steins, but clearly you are right on.

I thought this was really dumb, but I am enjoying it. Here are a few more:
Flower Drum Song and Pacific Overtures -- Sake
The Music Man and Annie Get Your Gun -- Sarsparella (sic) or Root Beer
Sweet Charity -- Pineapple Ripple
Do I Hear a Waltz -- Bellinis
Over Here -- Rum and Coca Cola
Gypsy -- to me is more like beer from the tap or Chinese Tea
Follies -- Spiked Punch

For Hamilton, I was going to suggest two 1/2 pints of Sam Adams (2 pints of Sam Adams, and I'm working on three), but here's an actual shot to raise a glass to freedom: http://www.goodfoodstories.com/alexander-hamilton-cocktail/

Jesus Christ Superstar -- matzo and a gentle pool of wine (served in a chalice, bowl, or woodcut goblet, depending on your mental picture of the Last Supper)
