I guess not that many people wanted to see Diana Ross' daughter. I figure at least a dozen shows did not make their weekly nut last week. Wonder how different the picture would be if someone with a brain was in the White House not alienating the rest of the planet. On top of that, there are another X shows that did make their nut, but are clearly contributing next to nothing to return money to the investors. Just awful.

Has the 7 year-old seen anything? If not, absolutely The Lion King. I took my kids when they were 5 and 6 and they were mesmerized. For a 7 year old, there is nothing that will approach LK or Aladdin. The child would be bored stiff at 2 Strangers and Spelling Bee, ask when it will be over 5 minutes into Hadestown (that would be cruel). I personally would not bring the child to LSOH. I think it is unfortunate that this is closing so soon after the great reviews and awards. That said, I hated this show from its third minute or so. Why? It is still CATS and I hated CATS. I may be forgetting some show, but I can't help thinking that Wicked was probably the first real hit that the Uris / Gershwin ever had. There were some critical hits, e.g., Sweeney Toodd, or revivals (one of the TKAI revivals), but I doubt that anything ever made money. It was regularly referred to as a white elephant and a sterile barn before Wicked. I imagine the theatre owners will give wide rein if it goes through some lean times. Not too long ago, there was a week where the average ticket price was less than $100...I think it may have in fact been less than $90, so they have been discounting tickets for a long time or papering houses. Why they have avoided TKTS so emphatically is beyond me. I do think that they will get a big boost when they finally do discount at TKTS...from all the people who don't know how to find discounts other than at TKTS. And then it will run another 10 years.

I saw DW 3 times in early 1969 (pretty sure), once in Boston, twice in NYC. I really enjoyed the show, because of Jerry Herman's score and Lansbury's great performance. Every time I saw it, it actually got worse. The first time I saw Each Tomorrow Morning, I thought it was one of the most beautifully staged numbers I had seen to that point (I was only 18 or 19, but I had seen just about every musical in the prior 5 seasons). Neither the production nor the star received good reviews. In fact, Laura Benanti got seriously better reviews (what ones there were) than Luker did. I think she needed a strong director to avoid giving a dull performance.
