Random Thoughts on Week Plus in the Theatre District Jun 5 2026, 10:32:09 PM
I saw the following shows: Joe Turner, Proof, Becky Sharp, Fallen Angels, Chess (also saw it in October), Ragtime (also saw it in October), The Lost Boys, Buena Vista Social Club (which I had not gotten to before), and Cats: Jellicle Ball. I had no interest in Schmiggadoon, which I now regret, since one of the people I was traveling with opted for that instead of Chess a second time, and she really enjoyed it.
I did not purchase tickets to Death of a Salesman because I was &lsquo

Ah yes - another record breaking year which will also be used to continue justifying pricing out your average audience members.
These numbers are certainly something to look at. I reall

I think that Adrien Brody is an excellent actor who deserved both of his Oscars. That said, he was never really a star. Other than the two bi

26/27 Musical Revivals May 24 2026, 07:20:57 PM
I will be shocked if we get even half the revivals listed. If I remember correctly, most revivals have not returned their investments either, and they are getting more and more expensive to produce. Since most revivals do not have huge runs, even if they return their investments, returns are not dramatic. I can think of Chicago and the Sam Mendes Cabaret as big hits...what else? And we also know what a financial disaster the last revival was for its investors.&nbs

Loved it too. Thoughts: (1) Patrick Wilson needs to get rid of that mustache; (2) Patrick Wilson still has a great voice and has to hit the boards again soon; (3) BP sounded pretty good and looked great, except her eyes reflect a face lift that did her no favors. (4) I wish Encores would schedule Over Here, with BP and Patti Lu

NYT on Rex Reed May 13 2026, 10:50:30 AM
I actually read many an article by him a thousand years ago, and he was a brilliant writer. His articles were regularly in the Times and were incredibly perceptive. I don't know whether he got full of himself or simply decided to be himself, other peoples' opinions be damned. I have to say that i felt bad upon reading of his death, and read all the articles that I could find. He was one of a kind.
I used to love his great reviews, because they

Most had no idea it had a Boston tryout. Most

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 5/10/26 May 12 2026, 03:24:57 PM
I am flabbergasted that Death is filling the Winter Garden, which is an awful theatre for any drama. I don't know what makes a 'legendary' production, but I am guessing that this will be viewed in the future as a legendary production. It will actually be a shame if it loses the Best Revival Tony because of Rudin hate.
How much money are the producers of Six going to lose before they conclude it is time to move it off-broadway or close it?

2026-2027 Broadway Season May 12 2026, 02:39:13 PM
This list in mid-May is really depressing. I'll admit that I don't even count Paranormal Activity, which seems stupid, and Celebrity Autobiography, which seems more a short-term attempt to fill the Shubert during the summer.

Another Kander & Ebb show for Liza that I enjoy the cast album for is "The Act." I wonder if it could ever be done with someone else? I know from what I've read online about it that it didn't wholly work at the time as a show, even though it gave her another Tony."
Chita got the Tony. Liza was nominated.

Woman Of The Year Revival Anyone ??? May 11 2026, 10:16:11 AM
It is inconceivable to me that anyone would invest money in a revival of this show. I missed a couple of K&E shows, specifically Steel Pier and The Rink, and I think this is probably the weakest of the rest. The score is positively mediocre, the humor is not there other than those 7 minutes. I remember trying to enjoy it because Bacall, who was great in Cactus Flower and Applause, was the star; but, other than Cooper's number, I don't remember anything else

I don't think that is true. The show was at TKTS for virtually every performance since it opened. Even when its grosses were high, the average ticket prices were not great. The show has played out. As someone else said, it is based on a cult movie -- one that I thought was a bore -- and the cult

Whatever happened to the play of 'Brokeback Mountain'? May 5 2026, 03:29:26 PM
I agree with Jordan's comments that the play was a waste of time (and it was short) and money (and in my case, a slot in a schedule limited to about 10 shows). The only way this might do well on Broadway is with two big names, and why would they want to do it??

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 5/3/26 May 5 2026, 03:26:44 PM
- I was really surprised that JIT's grosses and capacity dropped by 10% and 5% respectively. I would have expected JJ to be a bigger attraction than MM at this time. Three possible explanations: (1) JJ is not in for just 3 weeks, so less urgency for fans; (2) overexposure, between return visit to GG and Floyd Collins; (3) the show has peaked and the producers will run it until it starts losing money (something the DBH producers don't seem to get).

2026 New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards May 1 2026, 11:59:59 AM
I did not realize that Little Bear Ridge Road got such good reviews. Was Liberation eligible last year?
I do not remember there being a performance award. Is this new or recent, or have I been living in a bubble?
It must be quite a feather in Alden E's cap to win the award in a year that has so many great performances in leading roles. (I have not seen his play, so I don't know how large his role is). Given the acclaim that John Lithgow and Joshua

It absolutely would be. Leslie Uggams had a strong voice, but also a sweet one; I think that sweetness works well for the character. I believe JAR has both, but I imagine there are other people who would as well.
Someone else asked about the passage of time. I was intended (I believe)
