Add me to the list of always having to pee when I drink. That, and if it's a slow moving drama, I'm bound to fall asleep. Or if it's something funny, I tend to laugh way too loud.

so, no pre-theater drinking for me

Generally, it's a mistake for me. My first Driving Miss Daisy, I'd run into a friend I hadn't seen in years and we over-celebrated and I ended up seeing multiple Sada Thompsons throughout. Usually, drinking before a show makes me sleepy - I had a very expensive nap the only time I ever visited the English National Opera - it was a modern thing about rockets and everything was blue and there was no movement what-so-ever.

I consistently drink too much before very sad shows and giggle at inappropriate moments.

I snorted during the mad scene of Lucia di Lammermoor recently.

Yes, I am THAT person.

Well, you're certainly an asshole, that's for sure.

Personally, I like the idea of making going to the theatre an event. I like when people dress up for shows and have no problem with people who want to go out to a nice meal before the show and have a few glasses of a good wine or a few cocktails.

However, I think the you also have to keep in mind you personal limits. It's not fair to become a distraction to the people around you by tipsy foolish behavior. If you can have a drink or two and go to the theatre and it not infringe on your enjoyment of the show or anyone elses that's cool. But it does become a major problem when the people around you have their evening ruined by someone who is not behaving appropriately.

But also I think that can be applied to all theatre behavior not just a few drinks.

Often I will have a glass of wine prior to a show, but once I was with a couple of friends going to see Rocky Horror Show and we drank quite a bit prior to as well as at intermission, it really helped us get into the rowdy spirit of the show.

I just don't understand why people would want to get drunk and act up at a live performance. I mean, I understand it's because they're people who need attention so badly that they'll even conspire to get it at the most inappropriate times, but I just don't see why it's something to be proud of.

I am a firm believer that all theatre should be seen under the influence of some alcohol. If it is a great show then it makes it all that much more enjoyable but if it is painful it helps ease.

I could write a book on this thread. I love dinner or at least drinks before a show. It is part of the entire experience for me.

On many occasions this has come close to making me too tispy to see a show, but the worst time, was when I saw Wicked, for the first time, with the original cast. I was trashed and do not remeber most of it. I was/am mad at myself for ruining the show.

My next trip to NYC is planned for two weeks from now and I am seeing wicked again to rectify the situation, and realizing I could be using this time and money to see something "new" instead of a musical I have already "seen".

As long as you can handle your **** and not make an ass out of yourself, I think it is a great idea to have a few before you settle in for a great night of theatre.

I just don't understand why people would want to get drunk and act up at a live performance.

I would venture a guess that there's not a significantly higher percent of inebriated troublemakers than sober ones acting up at the theater. Most people can control themselves just fine if they had a few drinks with dinner.

Believe me, if I'd had something to drink before my last viewing of Spring Awakening I still would have remembered to politely stifle my giggles during Mirror Blue Night. Plus, who knows, I may have actually laughed during the "comedic" parts of Legally Blonde if I'd had a few drinks before that.

Theatre is too expensive for me to risk my enjoyment with alcohol. That's just me though.
