Absolutely not.
Just no.
But if need be, give it to Yazbek.

Not particularly.
If it absolutely HAD to be, I could see it (heavily adapted) working with Bill Finn, although he'd have too much heart with it. I mean, I love the movie, but it doesn't have an ounce of pity in it.

Posted: 4/8/07 at 1:37amIf it could be done in repertory with Fargo: The Musical, it would be a big hit in Minnesota, but I don't think it's a great idea and it doesn't sing. Sorry.

Didn't Smile have several books? I know New York Times online has a review of a mid 90s revisal that went back to Ashman's original "bitchier" script (which they say was replace don Broadway at the request of the producers though I assume with Ashman's full co-operation since he directed the piece) but also updated some bits (with such 90s phrases as politically correct0 but it didn't seem to work...

Regarding Smile and other shows like it, haven't any of you people read Not Since Carrie? It's required reading for theatre people. Get it and read it. It will end a lot of your questions about flops.
I understand that it's being updated or that Ken Mandelbaum's writing a sequel. Good for him! There have been a lot of flops since 1986.

Posted: 4/8/07 at 1:54pmI don't really know about this one. I think it works far too well as a movie.

The movie was on last night. Love the film, but enough with the adaptions...UNLESS you can get Allyson Janey to star in it!

Posted: 4/8/07 at 10:56pmThe Samuel French version of Smile is sharper and meaner than the Broadway version. Better in my opinion.

I think it would be a great piece for a community theatre to take on. Plus, it fits for Z-list community theatre actors to play the people in the film.
"Get off my dress, you clumsy retard."

Posted: 4/9/07 at 2:08pmI love this movie but don't see it as a stage show. The "documentary" aspect would be difficult to do onstage--and that is how the story is told for the most part, there aren't many (any) long scenes. Also, I think that while it's definitely a cult movie I don't think it has wide audience appeal. When I saw the movie in the theatre my partner, our friend and I were laughing but the rest of the audience just stared at the screen with their jaws hanging open.
