ENOUGH with EW's RENT movie obsession!

I think the "hype" we see is very... skewed. I'd tend to think that for most people - yes, those ones who aren't into theatre... they do exist! - RENT is still quite under the radar. Sure, it's in magazines here and there, but I don't think other people are seeing hype in the movie as much as we think we do.
Just like last night, someone was saying (I don't remember in what context) that she wondered, had she not been so into theatre, would she realize that it seems like everyone was talking about Wicked all the time?

Posted: 8/19/05 at 1:01pmI don't think anyone in the media thought "Phantom" was oscar-worthy. And I think WB is learning from their mistakes..."The Phantom of the Opera" had very little advertising. Hell, there are people out there who still don't know it was made into a movie. Let them advertise...though I think they should tack the trailer to every movie they distribute until it comes out. That would definitely have an impact. More people know about the "RENT" movie than knew about "Phantom of the Opera" at this same time last year.

But, you see, even millions in advertising won't help when the movie completely blows.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Emcee is right in that the RENT movie has probably barely made a dent in the general public's consciousness. Annoying as EW may be, it's that kind of publicity that will make non-theater people aware of it and maybe even interested in seeing it.
As for all the EW threads, that was a little overboard. Search, anyone?
