When I saw Little Mermaid, I got there 9 am and was the first in line for rush. I think it is fairly easy. Don't know if that has changed. But spare yourself, it is not that good of a show.
What about [TOS]? I think they have a lottery...dunno how difficult it would be.

My Little Mermaid experience wasn't as easy as yours, Millie. I got there before box office open, first in line, and then was told they were selling no student tickets. Then the next day (Friday) I stopped by to inquire about student tickets at 12:30ish and got them, no problem. I've been told it can depend on the box office person. But you are right about sparing yourself - I'm still debating if the show was even worth my $30 rush ticket.
I found Gypsy rush pretty easy. I went over there a few minutes after ten after being turned away at Mermaid and ended up with two seats in the front row on Orch left. Gypsy was amazing.
[tos] lottery isn't too bad, either. The day I tried, we all won (a Sat mat), but other days there are more people I was told (the night before only a few people didn't win). Depends on the day, I guess.

Posted: 7/30/08 at 4:38pmGypsy is very easy. My friend and I went on a Friday after losing the {tos} lotto, so it was at least 7:15 when we went ~ for an 8pm show. We were row G on the side, orchestra level.

FYI
TLM only does rush Tues- Thurs the last I checked.
Thurgood isn't hard, neither is chorus line

I thought that for Mermaid they (might) offer you any seats they have left? But since it has sold out this past week, I don't think they'll give you rush. There's no seats set aside specifically for rush. (Please correct if I'm wrong though, I've never rushed that show before).
But I say go for Gypsy! Rush tickets are so easy to get and it's a great show with a great cast.

Posted: 7/30/08 at 5:11pmGypsy is $27, and yeah, cash. Most rushes and all lotteries are cash only. Actually, the only one I knew of that would take credit cards for rush was A Catered Affair, so it may be all rushes now.

Yeah, i don't think Gypsy is cash. I used my credit card when i rushed during previews.
But most rushes are cash i believe.

Definitely try [tos]. It is so worth it.
Gypsy would be my number 2. Yes, Gypsy does accept credit cards, they're one of only a few houses that do.

I paid for my ACL lotto tix with a credit card- no idea if they went cash only or not when they switched over from lotto to student rush though.

Posted: 7/30/08 at 7:22pmACL takes cash or credit, and it's really easy to get. I got a ticket a little after 1 today for the matinee.

Posted: 7/30/08 at 8:40pmGypsy is definitely an easy one. I went last wednesday, got seats 101 and 102 front row center, and there were about 6 seats on the left. Go for it. And they have cushions you can use at the coat check that helps you see the stage a little better, although the view really isn't bad at all.
