Question about eating in theaters...just curious really.
Here in the UK it's a tradition that the ushers sell tubs of ice cream during the interval which invenitably I end up eating during the first part of the second act. Is this the same in the US as no one has mentioned ice cream.
Even in the far reaches of London, when I saw Wicked a middle aged woman was eating mints and rustling her packet all the time. Drove me nuts. Although I've never seen more than sweets (normally mints) being eaten in a theater here.

I sat behind a woman who slurped split pea soup out of a styrofoam cup during MASTER CLASS. I wanted to smack her.
"no one has mentioned ice cream."
I guess you didn't read my post.
I personally think it's quite tacky to eat during a live performace. It is not a movie house. But, what do you do with those that HAVE TO constantly eat during a tv and movie show. Unfortunately, Broadway has to accommodate them because it is a business anyway. I regret to see theatre lobbies turning into movie house concessions of hotdogs, nachos, popcorn, and soda machines someday. I know a few that already look like one. Bring in the chicharones!
I was quite pleased that tonight at Suburbia an usher forced people who were eating McDonald's burgers during intermission to leave or put them away. They were so like I'm sorry, we didn't know.
Upsets me that more ushers can't be stricter about food. But I guess sometimes it's the theater's policy and not the usher's faults. Still, it sucks.
At a performance I attended of "Thoroughly Modern Millie", a family of 4 brought in happy meals from McDonalds at intermission - thanks to a complaint to one of the ushers, they were able to take about a bite each before they were told to get rid of them! Unfotunately that smell stayed around well into the second act.
