Hey everyone! I am looking for some suggestions for edgy, contemporary musicals for our local theatre. Some shows we have done are Rocky Horror, Bat Boy the Musical, and Tick Tick Boom. There is a group of us really trying to push this theatre to do more contemporary musicals rather than just straight plays. It is a very small, intimate theatre with about 200 seats. Some suggestions we have made already are Urinetown, Reefer Madness, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. If you have other suggestions, please let me know! Thanks!

Hello Again or either Wild Party. Lachiusa's is edgier but Lippas is casting friendlier.
Prodigal is good for small theaters, but I am not sure if you can find the rights to it. Lucky Stiff is also a good show. Parade(Jason Robert Brown's Version) is good too. Hope that helps!
"I sing" has great numbers, and only 5 cast members. very contemporary and edgy. it was done off- broadway in 2001 ago.

Love "I Sing"
Also, try "Edges" it's more of a cabret show, but it only has 4 people in it and it's got great music.
And the rights to BARE are out.

I second Hello Again and either Wild Party. Both very contemporary and edgy.
Also I heard rights are already out for See What I Wanna See, snatch that one up!

Oops about Parade, I kind of forgot it was a massive show. Hurm, you should do The Last Five Years or Songs for a New World, or perhaps Elegies, or you could also try doing a revue like Putting It Together. Or there's always the classic standby for small shows You're A Good Man Charlie Brown(it may be old, but the messages are still there and it's a good show).
Cabaret is certainly contemporary and edgy.

Hair, while not contemporary, if done well can still be edgy.
And most sondheim shows quite an edge to them, assassins, company, passion, etc.
I think the key to picking shows lies not in the period in which the show was created, but the content that is innate in the show and how the director brings that out.
