While I really love Stritch's energy and enthusiasm on stage, I so much prefer Angela Lansbury's version!

What astonishes me about Stritch - and I understand she isn't "playing" Mame here - is how even when she is given material she isn't naturally suited for, she still manages to make it her own and infuse it with the most theatrically generous spirit.

Stritch wasn't necessarily my idea of Madame Armfeldt. There are others, from a strictly casting perspective, better suited to the role. But, her performance satisfied me as much as any other Armfeldt I've scene, and expect to ever see.

Hal Prince is right.. she IS a theatre unto-herself.
