Ok, here's the deal. I want to buy one of these two albums because I LOVE William Finn. But, which one? This is where I need your help. Which one do you like the best and why?

God that sounds like some kind of dating show question doesn't it?
If I HAD to pick only one, I would suggest Infinite Joy. Hearing all those stars sing such great music is a rare opportunity. Plus all the in-between material is comedic gold!
I'm slightly partial to Elegies (I love Christian Borle's songs), but you have to get Infinite Joy to hear Liz Callaway sing "Sailing"
If you can, get both!

Yeah, you should really get both. Infinite Joy's got Carolee Carmello and Norm Lewis and amazing turns, and Elegies has some pretty amazing stuff too.
Infinite Joy FOR SURE! Elegies is great because it's all autobiographical and you get to hear FINN sing an amazing song, but he's pretty funny on Infinite Joy, and who can beat the music on it? No one...
Finn doesn't sing on Elegies, he sings on Infinite Joy. He sings three songs in Infinite Joy.

INFINITE JOY! It's one of my favorite, favorite CDs. Wonderful performers singing great songs, including unreleased ones. Plus, you can hear Finn himself sing. I love Elegies too, but I'm more partial to Infinite Joy.

elegies is a better cd but infinite joy has some f*cking great performances... i would go with elegies, but norm lewis's anytime really questions my choice...
These are two of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE CDs of all time. Elegies is absolutely brilliant, but... Infinite Joy is incredible too. If I had a choice between eating for a day or owning both CDs, I would pick the CDs
Not even joking.
Get both. You won't be sorry!
I agree, it's impossible to choose. Carolee's "Boom Boom" is one of the most haunting show tunes ever recorded. On the other hand, you must own INFINITE JOY just to hear Mary Testa's Ruth Gordon monologue.
("It's just TANNIS ROOT, Rosemary. TAAAAAAANNNNNNNISSSSS ROOT!")
So I'll say buy IN TROUSERS instead, if it comes down to that.
If you have the rest of his stuff, I'd go for Elegies because Infinite Joy is a collection of his work. They are great performances but ultimately it'll be stuff u already have. Elegies on the other had, probably has stuff you haven't got.

You absolutely must have both. No question. Two of the best recordings of the past few years. You say you love Finn? Then you MUST have both of these. You won't be disapointed with either one.
Buy ALL of Finn's work - especially In Trousers...nice Veuve.
They are each so unique and wonderful for different reasons.
Infinite Joy - Finn singing, Norm Lewis (!!), Liz Callaway, and Carolee Carmello
Elegies - Only One, Boom Boom, When the Earth Stopped Turning, Venice, Monica and Mark...
