Bit late in replying to this but I assure everyone that Elena Roger was fantastic live. And though I was hesitant about Matt Rawle's Che to begin with, in the end his performance did improve and grew on me.
Roger's forte was not so much her voice (though I personally love it) as her energy, acting and her fantastic dancing. She basically made the revival.
Agreed that the cast recording is disappointing, but I still like it. If anything it brings back some lovely memories. I am totally perplexed by some of the cuts though -- the climactic tango instrumental to 'I'd Be Surprisingly Good for You' is completely absent! Apparently Tim Rice was disappointed by the fact it wasn't a double recording too, but there's the stupidity of RUG for you...
Oh and speaking of stupid decisions, yeah, to be honest Butler and Rossum simply got cast in that film because a) Schumacher wanted them, and ALW just agreed (although he's always seemed to have been hesitant about their casting and indeed he went on record this year as admitting he wasn't fully satisfied by the film) and b) Really Useful couldn't afford film stars with talent (in ALW's own words!). In the end it went against them that they produced the film independently without a studio behind them.
