re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

I was literally just slumping into my seat making very small noises of infinite amazment. Granted, Raul's voice is going to be shot to hell after that, but IT WAS SO GOOD.

Adam read his lyrics, but I don't care. I've always wanted to hear him sing/scream like that in person.... his inner rock star. re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

could someone explain Sherie's rant?

I really wish I could have come to this...freaking midterms.

I don't even know how to explain Sherie's rant. It was about Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning people.....

I love her.

...and Norbert...

...and the rest of them...

I'm bitter.

re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

"just want to say how perfect it was to see so many people I love sing their hearts out to some really amazing music. This is what they love to do, and it's so obvious when you watch it.

Highlight: Raul Esparza. That man is... unreal. The song was perfect for him, and he made it so heartfelt. Yay, Raul.

This was one hell of a show, and worth every single penny."

I couldn't put it in better words. And while I certainly agreed Raul was talented and such, I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan or really view him as amazing, etc...but I do after tonight! There were so many great performances, to pick his above all else says a lot. In addition to singing amazing notes, he "acted" the whole song, looked at the floor, breathe, you could see the feelings in his eyes. I was...blown away.

Thought I didn't know any Costello songs, but I did know "She" b/c of Notting Hill.

I won't be sleeping for a while, so I'll provide a song list, add a couple highlights here and there:

Peace, Love and Understanding-Gavin Creel, Eden Espinosa, Marcy Harriel

Radio Radio-Marcy Harriel

The Judgement-Norbert Leo Butz w/ Will Chase (more Norbert w/ Will jumping in for a higher harmony in the chorus, but both were pretty amazing)

Monkey to Man-Mario Cantone

I Want To Vanish-Molly Ringwald(clarinet played along, he was amazing!!!)

Lipstick Vogue-Kevin Cahoon(put a lot of energy into this one, and it showed!)

Alison-Anthony Rapp...just amazing...gorgeous...and of course eloquent Anthony gave a speech about Friends In Deed and how the original Rent cast met some people from the organization and Jonathan Larson was very close w/ the organization.

Accidents Will Happen-Eden Espinosa & Matt Morrison-very nice, especially Matt who was dorkily having fun, trying to "rock out"...kinda wished he sang solo, Eden did tend to oversing him volume wise, and he really reached some beautiful notes near the end. Oh well.

(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea-Justin Bond

Everyday I Write The Book-Daphne Rubin-Vega...dressed as a policewoman, was great to finally see her live, she was great and talked to her a bit after, she's really sweet

God Give Me Strength-Raul Esparza(already discussed)

Indoor Fireworks-Patrick Wilson(see Beacs, this time we know, so we don't hafta keep you in confusion/desparation wondering what he sang)

Party Girl-Nellie McKay

Beyond Belief-Adam Pascal...just great...first time I've seen him sing solo live in 3 years...sang the first part in a quiet tone very Adamish w/ his gorgeous voice, and then went very rockish...he was definitely having lots of fun and he did a great job, was fun to watch...and I know ppl have had different experiences but have to add this was...well my second encounter w/ Adam(first was a brief pic and a "you were great from me" and I would just like to say from my experience he was incredibly sweet and nice and gracious.

So Like Candy-Sherie Rene Scott-made cute comments about the Halloween Parade before singing, and Sherie's just great, reaches amazing notes

Veronica-Gavin Creel and Norbert Leo Butz...whole song was essentially harmonized, Gavin on the higher notes, Norbie doing lower...also had fun here, especially Norbie who did a bit of jumping around the stage, some kicking and ended it w/ a big bang like he does in Dirty Rotten Number

Then Elvis Costello sang like 4, 5? songs himself and...maybe others can help me out here? Then everyone sang together.

Just a fantastic, amazing night. What a treat!

Well, Sherie's rant ended w/ her putting on a mustache...it was cute.

re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

Raul blew that place away! Amazing!! Worth every penny and then some just for him.

Also loved Norbert's songs, especially the first one, The Judgement.

Other highlights for me...Patrick Wilson...thought he sang better than at Katrina benefit,
Anthony....thought he sounded eerily like Elvis C., but a bit smoother sound.
Really liked Sherrie's singing....

A couple of other people I appreciated the performance rather than the song.
I'm an Elvis Costello fan, but I knew not quite half of the songs. I may know them in their original form, but didn't recognize them as well in tonight's versions.

And love that Elvis did a small acoustic solo set. Fabulous!! Loved that first new song.
Saw him at Summerstage a couple of years ago. Never disappoints.

Wow, it sounds like this was a Raul performance not to be missed.

Everyone sang together at the end? That must have been amazing.

re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

As disappointed in Raul as I was on Saturday, this performance reminded me exactly WHY I am a fan of his. He's a little powerhouse!

re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

Well this is just my two cents... Waited on line for nearly 5 hours today, and it was worth every minute of it. the show didn't start till nearly 30 minutes after 8pm.

Peace, Love and Understanding: Gravin Creel, Eden Espinosa, Marcy Harriell
--It was so exciting the first number! So much energy both onstage and in the audience, everyone was just so pumped. Marcy had bunny ears and a bunny tail on, she was SO cute!

Radio Radio: Marcy Harriell
--SO good. Like always. This woman can do no wrong in my eyes.

She: Billy Porter
--He was awesome, I've never seen him before and I'm glad I did!

The Judgement: Norbert Leo Butz/Will Chase
--Will had a very small backup part, but Norbert was awesome, as usual. I love his voice so much.

Monkey to Man: Mario Cantone
--"They told me to come out and be funny for a minute!" Haha, he SO was. When the beginning of the song started playing, he said, "Oh god damn, let me get these words right!!!" and then he forgot the words at one point so he stopped the music and said, "I have to go back!!" He was great though, I like his voice a lot.

I Want to Vanis: Molly Ringwald
--How did SHE perform in Cabaret? I wasn't impressed at all by her performance.

Lipstick Vogue: Kevin Cahoon
-- Kevin was FANTASTIC. love him, love him, love him. His song was really energetic and he just tore it up!

ALISON: Anthony Rapp
--This was my multiple orgasm of the night. Because, hello, it's MY NAME!! This is the song that my uncle has sung to me since I was a baby, and now Anthony was performing it?! He was awesome. Loved every minute of it, front and center.

Accidents Will Happen: Eden Espinosa/Matthew Morrison
--I don't remember too many specifics, but it was great. They're both GREAT.

(I Don't Wanna Go To) Chelsea: Justin Bond
--Justin is a dragqueen, and said he thought this song was about Chelsea, England, and he remembered why he didn't want to go to Chelsea, England, and he said it was an incident having to do with drugs and a boyfriend and he was like, "Hopefully I'll remember the words... Well, if I hadn't done the drugs, I would, but if I hadn't done the drugs, I wouldn't have any inspiration for this song!!" And he had lyrics written on his hand, he was great!

Everyday I Write a Book: Daphne Rubin-Vega
--OMG, OUTRAGEOUS OUTFIT. Fishnets, redboots, a black tutu with a red pleather pair of lollipops under them, a button down white shirt that was tied, and a oversized-captains hat. AMAZING. I love her voice, and she was great. She's amazing

God Give Me Strength: Raul Esparza
--I have to be honest, I really don't like it when he does that high pitched vibratto, he was just beating it tonight. But I still adore him as a performer.

Indoor Fireworks: Patrick Wilson
--Not too much to say. He's pretty and he sings like a god.

Party Girl: Nellie McKay
--Who is this woman? The song was really cute, she performed it well, i guess.

Beyond Belief: Adam Pascal
--I love Adam's voice so much, it's so "rock." I have so much love for him again.

So Like Candy: Sherie Rene Scott
--Loved it. One of her boobs was about to pop out of her shirt, but that's okay. She looked and sounded amazing though! I loved her beginning rant though!

Veronica: Gavin Creel/Norbert Leo Butz
--A really strong and awesome-almost ending. They both exude so much sex and power that it's insane.

Then the man himself, Mr. Elvis Costello, came out and performed five songs. He recieved a standing ovation when he came out. On the last song, the entire cast came out and performed it with him. Some of them had their sheet music with them, nice of you to learn it, guys!! just kidding...

re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

I have a sweater like yours.

Was Daphne's hair blond for real, or was it a wig or extensions or something? Her costume sounds awesome.

re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

I agree that she did some wonderful singing, really nailed that song. I wasn't crazy about her costume, but it didn't really matter. I have her album Unreleased and love it.

re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was her hair, briefly chatted w/ her after and I wouldn't think she would keep the wig on and anyway, it looked like her hair. I got a pic w/ her though, see if I can confirm when that comes out.

re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

*sigh* I love Raul. I knew I would regret missing this. But, some things just can't be helped. Honestly though, I feel like every performance he gives is not to be missed. He sings with so much heart. I love seeing him perform becuase it always reminds me that's the kind of performer I want to be. It absolutely appalling to me when people look as though they are singing to the mirror.

I was told Diane Sawyer was the host. Is it true? I can't find any info about the concert.

re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

Was great - sat back in Row M orch (didn't need the binocs we brought), but doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. Raul's take on the song (God Give Me Strength) was different, prefer the raspier Elvis sound on that one though (wife lovesssss Raul). Was a highlight though. Mario Cantone was hilarious, Molly Ringwald was stiff as a board (and I like her!!!). "Allison" (Anthony Rapp) was perfect. Kevin Cahoon was interesting, was expecting the "childreeeeeen" to come out of him though - lol. Norbert was amazing, he really does have a great stage presence and voice. Eden Espinosa was also great, kept having to pull her top up, but sounded great as usual.

Was a pleasure to attend, had a great time! Could even see a swimming pool from the lobby before heading in (knew I smelled chlorine in the lobby)!
