re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

He was sitting on a stool and looking at a music stand that was set up behind the piano.
At first I thought he was just singing with his eyes closed (see the reference in the Rent book about his audition), but then realized he was reading.

The entire cast had sheet music with them for the final number.

Well I can't tell you what was on the paper, given that I didn't see it, but he definitely wasn't holding it. Wow Liotte, I thought he was closing his eyes too.

But actually timesuckage, about him caring about performance quality, the way I see it is yes, he should have known the song, even though he had less time. But since he didn't, I would much rather him do what he did inconspicuously then to either have to stop the song b/c he forgot words or make-up words. The song was very powerful and building, and it really would have been terrible to have to stop it in the middle.

re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

Adam was sitting in a stool up on the steps that were going up center stage. There was a music stand placed up against the piano, down about two steps, diagonally in front of him. It you were sitting at a certain angle, it was obvious. But, if you were on the side of the stage where the piano was, it blocked your view of Adam's legs, and hence the music stand. It was sort of... at his knee level. I have no idea if it was sheet music or just lyrics. I once read somewhere that he doesn't read music when he learns songs, but I don't know how true that is. The stand was a good few feet away from him -- more as a safety net, I think. IMO, it didn't kill the quality of his performance very much. He still sounded great and had a ton of energy, and like I said before, once he got going with the song he only had to glance down occasionally.

ETA -- his eyes *were* closed for a good part of the song, which is how you can tell that he wasn't entirely reading. re: Elvis Costello concert reviews!

"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell plus i proudly share the title of the shortest member over the age of 10 with wickedrentq!

Fun to hear Matthew Morrison singing the duet rock song "Accidents Will Happen." He has perfect timing.

Also great to have Patrick Wilson back in town singing "Indoor Fireworks." He gave the song a real "country" feel.

Kevin Cahoon was a hot ticket with the best costume. The dancers for his "Lipstick Vogue" were super.

Sherie Rene Scott has a powerhouse voice; she sang a wonderful "So Like Candy."

And all the others, especially Elvis Costello, were great. Nice show for a worthy cause...

There was just way too much talent in one room last night.

It was probably the most amazing line up ever. Anthony, Marcy, Daphne, Kevin... all long-time favorites of mine. So worth waiting for five hours.

Aww, GREAT pics! Were those all taken at the after party?

Some great shots...Adam and Daphne, Adam and Anthony, two Radames and Rogers, Adam w/ former costars Daphne and Sherie in the same pic(okay really trying to get out of a certain pattern), Norbert looks TALL compared to Mario, the Matt and Raul pic is really adorable, Adam and Patrick complement each other really well...

I think the last one including Adam, Matt and Patrick all in the same picture takes the cake, though.

They loved Raúl. He got his own paragraph! I keep thinking about how truly mind-blowing that performance was. He got applause a few times in the middle of the song, and I can't help but think that that's the sort of reception someone like him should always recieve. I just don't think I've ever seen anything like that, from him or from anybody. I had sort of joked that he virtually made an entire one-man play out of a song, but it's not totally in jest. He just tore the roof off of that place, and you could sort of feel the entire audience on edge with him. A.MA.ZING.

Seriously, my brain still can't handle how much talent was packed into one place.

Wow, didn't expect the times to write about it. Gotta agree about Raul, I wouldn't go so far to say it was a one-man show, way too much talent in the room, but as I've said before, for him to clearly sail above that whole amazingly talented field does say a lot. I thought maybe he would get an curtain call, but they didn't go for it.

And a couple of nice specific mentions there for Matt, Anthony, and Adam.
