got this article off of yahoo news. not quite sure what to think about it.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Always eager to keep Elvis Presley (news) working, managers of his estate have turned their sights on Broadway. "All Shook Up," a musical commissioned by the Elvis Presley estate and featuring a string of Presley's hit songs, is scheduled to open on Broadway in spring 2005....

Great, just what we need, another cut and paste score. Yawn. Would anyone like to re-answer this weeks poll question?

PEACE.

SO sorry. i didn't realize it was such a huge issue since people regularly post new york times articles just because they don't feel like paying the charge to read them on their own. if you're going to make your comments to me, maybe you should make them to everyone else also because i've never seen you complain when other people post articles like the ny times ones on the message board.

Speaking of cutting and pasting, it is much safer to post a link to the article. You should all be regestered at NYT anyway. It is free and easy.

I'm actually amazed it took THIS long.
I would have thought an Elvis musical would have come and gone on Broadway during the "Beatlemania!" era.

MasterLcZ:

The people who manage Elvis' music have been working quite hard on getting it to make a comeback. I assume that this is another attempt to move it back into the mainstream.

The fundamental problem as I see it is - what is the connection between people who like Elvis and theatregoers? I don't see your average Elvis fan going out to see a Broadway show, and I don't see theatre audiences responding well to Elvis' music. The successful catalogue shows - Mamma Mia! and Movin' Out - are more from the music of the '70s and '80s, where nostalgia seems to run high among theatregoers.

Do we really need this? As it is we have already (in England and Australia) had Are You Lonesome Tonight? and Elvis the Musical, I'd have hoped that Broadway had more taste (and sense), obviously not. Mamma Mia is one thing, but Elvis, blah.

I also saw mention of a new musical in London called "Jailhouse Rock."

If I'm not mistaken, I believe this is the same musical that was very well received at readings earlier this year, but at that time was entitled "Can't Help Falling in Love." I recall word-of-mouth being that the show was loads of fun, clever, and quite hilarious! Apparently Jarrod Emick was especially entertaining in the male lead....Anyone know if he's still going to be involved? Anyway, let's not be too quick to judge this project, JUST because it uses the songs of Elvis Presley!

I would enjoy this if it were a veryyy creative story, using Elvis's songs with a different spin than we would expect and having a dark dreary dramatic ending. Let's not have another Mamma Mia.
