Encore Magazine, which launched about a year ago with Broadway's re-opening (and with Bernadette in "Face Shield Realness" gracing it's first cover....) is officially out of business.
as luck would have it, i renewed my subscription just before they shutdown, and have been unsuccessful in getting a refund. Guess they're hoping to hang on to my 29.95 to help big them out of their financial mess.
Anyone here able to get their money back for all or part of their subscription?
I renewed my subscription last January but never received another issue. I’m not surprised that they went out of business. It wasn’t a great magazine. Being someone who stays up to date on the latest theatre news, I felt I never learned anything that I couldn’t get on this site. I also felt that I could have written a lot of the articles. There was no celebrity interviews and often quotes from other places. A puzzle at the end of each issue was usually poorly designed.
They definitely had no idea how to even market themselves. Their most recent Instagram post was September 2021 - almost a year ago. If you want to get subscribers, you need to promote your publication. I wasn’t even aware of this publication yet follow Broadway daily. If they skipped my radar, their marketing sucks.
This magazine never lived up to my expectations. But, yes, I did renew my subscription as I wanted to support a theater mag and I usually found one or two articles to enjoy in the issue - I even enjoyed the puzzles. Remember we were first told to "go online" for the Mar/Apr edition because they were unable to print (supposedly due to covid). Should have seen the writing on the wall that it wasn't long for the world. I do not even know how one would go about getting a refund in this instance. I don't think you would get any response if trying to communicate.
I am friendly with one of the regular contributors to the magazine and even he was taken by surprise by the demise of the publication. He does not know the whole story behind the end of Encore.
I am sure the editor/founder of this magazine has got to have egg on his face and is probably pretty embarrassed this happened. But, still, legally isn't the publication bound to refund for services not rendered?????

When it folded, our subscriptions were fulfilled by Playbill magazine which wasn't nearly as good and tanked as well."
I actually subscribed to Encore and paid a full years subscription. When it come to renew, I just didn't feel like renewing, so I didn't. Good thing...in retrospect.
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

You will have to find out if the owners filed for bankruptcy or not. If they did, you should file a claim against them as a subscriber for a refund. Most likely, subscribers will be very last on the list of creditors to get paid if there’s any money left. So don’t be disappointed if you don’t get your $30 back.
If they didn’t file for bankruptcy you can file against the owner in small claims court. No guarantees you will be refunded.
