Perhaps in the future before an article is written on a show, the person writing the article should do some research. Had this been done, Engelbert would not have been described as a "classic crooner" for which he is not but as a "contemporary singer". Had the person been paying attention they would have heard him say "Humpy's dinkie"(in reguard to his name - get it?)not "Humpy's dickie". To say that he "desecrated" Heartbreak Hotel, is by far an unacceptable description of his rendition of this song, as the audiance totally loved it and was applauding and screaming the entire time. Him bringing a woman on stage, does not serve as a fantasy, but as an honor and a dream come true to be able to share a few minutes, with the impeccably sexy, handsome and talented man. To describe his audiance as being older then they have ever seen, made it sound like they sent in a bus load of gereatic patients. Excuse me, but had you looked carefully, you would have seen many young people there including my friend and myself, who by the way are at the very old age of 38. Perhaps it may have been best that the person writing the article, who has not seen him since the mid 80's, would have kept it that way. In the future, do your homework.

Um, wasn't Engelbert Humperdinck a German composer most famous for his version of Hansel and Gretel???

Amen to all that Enge4024 said, and more! I echo her thoughts completely.

My 40-something daughter-in-law described him as a "Hunk" and a "Hot, sexy man, with the pipes and moves to go with it!" That was last month! When someone is as handsome and talented as Engelbert, age means nothing.

The author of the article made him sound crude, when in reality, his jokes are based on the name Humperdinck. Which, yes, was the name of an 18th Century German Composer. He wasn't using it anymore when Gordon Mills chose it for OUR Engelbert. He is NOT crude, but he IS funny. The name is perfect for little double entendré jokes by one of the sexiest men of our time, still. It takes a look, attitude, belief and life experience to make a man truly sexy, all of which he has.

When a lady is called on stage, it is an honor, and a moment to be remembered and cherished forever. I cannot think of another singer who could make me feel that honored, and I DO know what I'm talking about.

Also, Engelbert and Elvis were friends, and for the record, Engelbert had the sideburns and white suits first. Apparently, the author didn't understand that Heartbreak Hotel was SUPPOSED to sound different. If he chooses, Engelbert can sound exactly like Elvis...I've heard him do it, when he does a comedy routine. But he doesn't need to do a song just like Elvis...he has his own magnificent voice, and puts his own chops on the songs he sings. Instead it was a compliment to Elvis, but not a clone and certainly not a desecration. Elvis was NOT God...his songs are NOT sacred.

My comment to the author...you have disrespected one of the most magnificent singers, showmen, and most of all, true gentlemen of our time, and I say shame on you.

You are 100% correct LoveEnge in saying that the author made Enge sound crude and has totally disrespected him.

If nothing else, Engelbert is entitled to an apology for being misquoted, misidentified and making him sound less then the sexy, handsome, magnificent singer and gentlemen that he is.

And to the author, I double the shame on you.

In case anyone is wondering, the article we are upset about is "Engelbert Humperdinck at the Orleans" written by Ellen Sterling on June 13. About the only GOOD thing she had to say is that he's a master at ballads. Otherwise, she made him, and his fans, sound like doddering nursing home residents, and basically, made fun of him and the audience. I have seen him many times, and there are all ages in his audience, including young women, AND young men, as well as his solid fan base who have been loyal for many years.

Engelbert is a well-rounded singer, with a vast répertoire, including country and rock as well as ballads. Do your homework, Ellen.

There are, believe it or not, two entirely different people with the name Engelbert Humperdinck. The first, as musikman mentioned, was a German opera composer who is most famous for "Hansel and Gretel".

The pop singer with the same name chose it as a stage name (deliberately from the composer) since his real name Arnold George Dorsey wasn't especially memorable.

But no, the man who sang "After The Lovin'" did not also compose operas.

First of all his name change has nothing to do with the complaining about the article written.

Secondly, the "Pop Star" did not pick the name, his manager, Gordon Mills, chose it for him.

And lastly, he is not the first singer to change his name. He has some great company in Tony Bennett, Boby Rydell, Sting, Tom Jones & Elton John to name just a few.

I'm confused..... is Englebert Humperdinck...either the living or the dead one, on Broadway?

And why did this person with at least 3 different screen names join this Broadway website today to talk to herself?

I would be willing to say it's probably Mr. Engelbert Humperdinck himself, or someone working for him from reading the username. And by the way, why in the world would you change your name to Engelbert Humperdinck? Sure, there is that famous composer, but why wouldn't your manager urge you to pick a more modern stage name?

enge4024 and LoveEnge, do us all a favor and go post this crap on a website where people care.

I feel like this is a late April Fools joke or something. Or perhaps somebody is doing some viral marketing? I did a google search for the article and the author they mentioned being angry at for insulting Engelbert, and there's a BWW article from a week ago that seems to be what they're making reference to, but I think that looks like a fake.

Thoughts?: https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Engelbert_Humperdinck_At_The_Orleans_Croon_On_20090613

As a senior citzen, I feel dismayed when I find another of my generation parading around in his past. It's time for Englebert Hump-a-whale to come t his senses and start singing and acting in a manner closer to his age.

Yeah, he was good in his day, but he's delusional to think he's still a hunk.

Sad. Terribly sad.

dollypop...I don't recall Engelbert EVER saying he was a hunk. My daughter-in-law (early 40s) classified him as a hunk and very hot. I don't know how old you are...but maybe you need to get your glasses changed. I'm near Enge's age, and have seen him up close, and he is a HUNK.

Being sexy or a hunk has nothing to do with age, as I stated previously. It has to do with grooming, a look, an overall attitude and a belief in oneself. He has had no plastic surgery done, which is a plus, and is slim and trim and very fit.

He is a very nice man, still an excellent singer, and doesn't deserve all the nasty remarks, especially since he's just trying to please his fans, which he does, very well. I dread the day when he stops performing...it will be very bleak, indeed.

If you don't like his style or music, fine...don't look, don't listen, and don't make nasty comments. I don't like a lot of people's favorites, but haven't slammed anyone. I just don't read their posts, or listen to their music...whatever.

If anyone wants to make nasty remarks to ME, about ME...bring it! You can't bother me with insults, because you know nothing about me, and I really don't care. BUT making nasty remarks about a man who has enriched the lives of millions qualifies as worm's belly low. Linda F.

LoveEnge, defensive much? Tell us, were you the type to fling your panties and phone number when Engelbert sang?

Did Engelbert ever perform on Broadway? I can't figure out why this thread is here.

Not defensive...loyal. There is a difference. I don't like it when anyone who is important to me is disrespected, especially when it's undeserved.

I don't throw my panties, bras, keys or anything else. I have met him, talked with him, posed for a photo with him...don't NEED to demean myself by throwing stuff. I approach him with dignity and respect, and that's the way I'm treated. I'm not wild-eyed and screaming...don't try to rip his clothing off...I do just fine by being a lady. I wait for my turn when there's a large group, which is most of the time. And he's a perfect gentleman. Linda F.

If this kind of non-theatre related CR*P is going to take over the Broadway forum I'm going to stick to the West End one!

p.s. I agree about the sock puppets or maybe it's multiple personalities!
