Rather than creating a new thread, I too have an Eponine understudy question: I have tix to Les Miz tonight, am hearing that Celia is sick and might not be on, so has anyone seen her understudy yet, is she good?
Yes, yes, I know- the understudy is an understudy on Broadway, of course she's good, etc., etc. I know all that.
The thing is, I *loved* Celia's Eponine, and I have been given the opportunity by the person who set up my tix to exchange them for a later date if Celia is in fact out, so I am not sure if I want to do that exchange, or if I should go tonight and check out her fabulous understudy.

Posted: 3/14/07 at 11:44amHold out for Celia. From what I've heard, Megan's interpretation isn't groundbreaking in any sense.

Posted: 3/14/07 at 12:36pmI saw Marissa McGowan go on last night and she was fantastic. No need to worry if she's on when you go -- she's a great actress and a wonderful singer.

I LOVE Celia's Eponine, and I've seen her about ten times (and I have been vocal about my love for her). But Marissa and Megan are both excellant. It sounds like you have previously seen Celia's performance; if so, you will recall the differences as you watch whichever u/s is on. I wouldn't NOT go because Celia might not be on.
And besides, if you've not seen Lea yet --Don't put off till tomorrow ...
p.s. Hail Celia!

Posted: 3/14/07 at 1:47pmThanks all- I think we're going to go tonight and see her understudy (or I guess see one of her two understudies- I didn't even know there were two until now)...mostly because of the we really really really want to see Lea factor. :)

So I got to see Marissa McGowan as Eponine tonight. She was perfectly lovely- I mean that in a completely honest, non-snark way, she was fine, no complaints, etc. I do still like Celia's Eponine the best though.
But Oh. My. Gawd.- Lea Salonga as Fantine. That was just *love* right there. You know how people have those color bars (that I usually mock) on their LiveJournal or MySpace or whatever saying "_____ is love?" It's like that.
I had the misfortune of seeing Daphne as Fantine many months ago, and I actually cringed during some of her singing (Daphne fans please keep your PMs to yourselves- we're just gonna have to agree to disagree on this one), and tonight was my...eighth? ninth?...time seeing Les Miz total, counting tours and Broadway, and Lea Salonga just so *owned* Fantine for me so much so that by the time she did "Come to Me" I had already cried at three different parts in her performance. I hadn't felt chills like that watching a performer since wayback when I first saw LaChanze in The Color Purple.
The show entire tonight was just so on, I felt that same- magic, if you will, even though I kinda think maybe 'magic' is a cheese word- that I first did when I was in the 9th grade and Les Miz on tour was the very first show that I was ever seeing. I shed a tear during the Finale too. And during "Bring Him Home." I was completely a hot mess tonight.
