Based on the post about shows that everyone says are great, but which YOU found disappointing -- what shows are true in the reverse??

What shows do people generally consider to be bad shows, flops, wastes of time, that you LOVE?

Also, have you ever seen a show that you thought would be bad, but ended up loving??

==================================================

Answering my own question, I loved TABOO, recently, despite the dire predictions in the press and on some threads. I also loved THE SCARLETT PIMPERNEL (2.0), despite hearing it was not very good.

I guess, technically SCARLETT P. goes into the second part of my question. I went to see it expecting to hate it, but loved it. True also of my experience with ASPECTS OF LOVE, which I only saw because I had a guest in town and it was the only thing playing we could get tickets to on a Monday evening. I LOVED IT! TABOO goes into this category, too, really, since I went thinking how often I disagree with Rosie O'Donnell's version of "good shows" and left thinking it was exactly as good as she said it was.

I loved Sweet Smell of Success and so did my boyfriend. We did not even see the show at the same time. I really like the score too. Especially the Fountain song.

why did people hate that show so much? I have seen much worse on B'way that did better than Sweet Smell. I t should not have closed so quickly.

Everyone seems to hate Fame, but I love it. The score is really upbeat and fun.

My wife & I loved all 3 of the Wildhorn shows which the mainstream critics crapped on & people here & off the board were evenly divided on (loved or hated them) .

THE LOOK OF LOVE
Most notably, the scene with Rachelle Rak in "24 Hours to Tulsa". Wow! She was hot, and funny too.

Well I don't LOVE it, but I did like Taboo, and not just because of Raul. The flaws in the show jump right out, mainly the book, but I loved the score, costumes, and acting. I couldn't get it out of my head the next day and just went back to see it on my birthday last week with a friend.

I loved The Goodbye Girl. The music is great and Bernadette Peters and Martin Short were amazing!!!

I could be wrong, but it seems like no one really likes Jekyll and Hyde. My school just got done doing it and it is one of the most hauntingly beautiful, touching, frightening (insert a million other adjectives of praise here) show I have ever seen. My theatre teacher, who directed it, is a genius. That, and I'm head over heels obsessed with the guy who played Jekyll/Hyde, but no one needs to know that... HaHaHa

It seems like a lot of people on here dislike RENT. That's the show I credit for really making me the Broadway fan I am today. I wonder why no one really seems to like it? In my opinion, and it makes me sad to say this, I think RENT is past it's prime in a sense that the roles are sometimes done the same way over and over. Oh well, I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

Me 2 Me 2 I love FAME the musical it is so bright and happy and upbeat it is what Broadway musicals are supposed to be like! It is so funny and witty!! I love the joke about how the girl is on a seafood diet and she says when she sees food she eats it, and the joke is so funny that they have her say it twice!! ROFLMAO!

I'm so cute!! That's what they tell me! They tell me I'm so cute!!

Cabarethed -

I think you are exactly on the money about Taboo. I hope a tour or something fixes the more glaring difficulties, honestly.

I thought Sweet Smell of Success was pretty good. I was only bothered by the motivation of the CC Hunsacker character. His obsession with Susan had no basis. Her being his sister was not enough, IMO. But with John Lithgow in the lead, there was a limit to what they could do. I also think the movie fails in that respect, so if the musical was bent on being as close to the movie as possible, then they were doomed. They couldn't fix anything, in other words. But I still love to listen to Jack Noseworthy sing "I cannot hear the city" ... what a beautiful voice! If he and Gavin Creel were in a show together, you could not keep me away!!

I never saw Fame, the musical. I would not go unless I had a free ticket, because the movie meant so much to me, I would not choose to taint that memory.

As far as Rent goes, I'm afraid I'm one of the detractors. However, I will say that the second time I saw it (out of town teenage guests who HAD to see it) I was pleased with how well it stood replacements. There are some shows that are really based on the star in the role, or the original cast, and when you see them later they are not very good (had this experience last weekend with TMM) but Rent has something that moves performers, moves characters enough that anyone can play the roles and you'll still get a 100% energy show.

I wish I'd seen The Goodbye Girl and The Look of Love, but alas they came and went too quickly.

MyNameInLights: when you're in a show you can come to love it, despite its flaws. And someone cute in the lead can save it, too. Just look at The Boy from Oz!! Hugh Jackman was enough to keep me rivited, despite the weak story! I'm with you on that one!!

I felt the same way about Sweet Smell of Success. I thought the reason why CC Hunsacker was so obsessed with his younger sister would be revealed at the end of the show and it never was. The show was entertaining though. I didn't hate it at all.

My Name In Lights - It was an excellent production. And your Jeckyll/Hyde has sure come a long way from Peter Pan when he was just a youngin! And I like Jeckyll & Hyde. I think the music is good and the show is entertaining. What girl doens't like a show with two powerful female leads? Is it an artistic masterpiece? No. But I still like it.

I like the soundtrack for Sweet Smell of Success. I was actually shocked to see so many negative referrals to it on the board. I'm shocked a lot at what the people on this and other boards dislike. I don't get to see any broadway, but I buy lots of soundtracks and from what info I can get, it's always interesting to hear the opinions of people after I've made my opinion the best I can without actually having seen it.

To Christine

I liked both POTO & DOTV. A show has to be really bad for me to not like it. POTO was the better show but DOTV was entertaining nonetheless

I really enjoyed RENT and Millie, but a lot of folks on the board don't seem to care for them. *shrugs* To each their own I suppose.
