Not everything. Just the bad shows.
In that case, you know you're in trouble when the bad shows close; they're the ones that always last!
haha, Lizzie.
Well, I guess if all the bad shows are closing, that must mean anything that is not the biggest tourist attraction is bad. I guess that means that Wicked, Jersey Boys, and Phantom have to stay open forever, since they so far are not closing, and that means they are the best shows ever.
Don't forget MAMMA MIA - the greatest musical ever to hit Broadway.
Good point as always, the appropriately named "iluvtheatertrash."
Right, I forgot about Mamma Mia. Although I do love that show, I know realistically it will close eventually. And I know it is not the best piece of theater ever created.
I still feel like I'm in denial about the closings of Xanadu, Legally Blonde and Spring Awakening since I'm seeing the tours in less than a month...but STILL! I'm ecstatic to see they are having a longer life, but it won't be the same walking through the Great White Way without all that pink and red on display
Damn skippy, MB!
I like the out with the old, in with the new sentiment, but with the economy the way it is, we may not see much new!
I would rather the show close than stunt cast to stay open.

Of all the announced closings, only Hairspray and Spamalot seemed to be the ones no one expected. Legally Blonde was sentenced to death in July when the Palace was booked by the producers of West Side Story. Spring Awakening was doing poorly and so it should be no surprise. Hairspray and Spamalot weren't doing great, but obviously the advanced bookings don't exist for these shows to justify keeping them running.
I thought the strike was bad last year - this is becoming worse.

I didn't think Spamalot's closing notice was all that surprising.
There will be a lot of new stuff coming in soon, so I'm excited to see what's going to happen.
I blame GWB
Seriously, POTO is not closing.
RENT!!!!!!!!!!
*singing softly to self* i diee.. without youu..
A lot of good shows are closing earier than they would in good times but I feel the more serious problem is that producers will be very reluctant to open new shows in this economy.

Alas, if all the family fluff closes (minus Spring Awakening, of course), and gives way to quality theater, what will the dumbing down of America do? After all, High School Musical 3 had the 3rd highest pre-sale in film history. Ill just pop my popcorn and wait unabashedly for Ishtar: The Musical.
My only concern is that with the economy new shows won't be filling all these vacant spaces. That will be the real shame.
I have a feeling we're looking at shorter runs for things in general, which I don't think is really a bad thing as long as musicals recoup. The concept of something running forever is a relatively new invention.
Ishtar The Musical ?
Has possibilities.
