I am going to see the tour in Costa Mesa tomorrow and was wondering what people thought of the show. I did the search on the boards and things seemed to get a tad heated when it was brought up. I was looking for a new perspective. If anyone has seen it please tell me about it.

Posted: 10/11/05 at 7:42pmI saw it back when Bradley Dean was still Che and absolutely loved it. He was wonderful. I also enjoyed Kathy Voytko (sp?) very much. I had never seen Evita before, and I was pleased to say that it was an all around fantastic production.

re: Evita Tour#3

Believe it or not, I saw him fall off the stage in Chicago. At the very beginning, he slid across the stage as he sang "instead of government, we had a stage, instead of ideas, a prima donna's rage..." Plop... right into the orchestra pit.
He was okay... but the audience was confused... Show REALLY needs updating... it's almost boring.

Posted: 10/11/05 at 7:58pmJust saw evita like a week ago...its okay Che is the best character on stage though, Kathy wasnt as strong as you would have hoped singing wise...none the less its Andrew Lloyd Webber and of course the music is repetitive but still beautiful. It wasnt the best but entertaining at least

Posted: 10/11/05 at 10:47pmKeith Byron Kirk was AWESOME as Che. I didn't see Kathy in it though. I saw an understudy.
Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.
Javert: (Looks for gun)

This show is very hit-or-miss here on the boards. Some people loved it, others hated it. Coincidently (or, maybe not) it was the people who had never seen a professional production of Evita that loved it.
I saw the show just after the tour launched in Boston last year. I loved it.

Back in December 1980 I had tickets for Evita. I paid $30 for a front row center seat (that was a lot for a guy in high school). Got to the theatre that night only to find out that Patti was out that night, so we saw Nancy Opel go on as Eva. She was very good, but I was really looking forward to seeing Patti. I did see her cabaret act at Les Mouche though.
I did enjoy Hal Prince's staging at the time, and was looking forward to seeing the tour in DC but won't get to see it because I'll be away for the holidays.

The show is very hit or miss, and mostly serves as a "star vehicle" for the gal playing Eva. I saw Florence Lacey on the road, and thought she was amazing... but I found the musical to be fairly boring overall. It's hard to get involved with it, unless you're staring at the leading lady in total admiration of her talent. The character of Che, while fascinating, keeps pulling the audience OUT of the action. It ends up kinda like watching the plot unfold through a microscope.
I was also IN a production of "Evita" a long while ago, with Marin Mazzie as the lead. She was absolutely great, but the show is still as I described above... even from the OTHER side of the stage.

Erin Dilly was Eva when I saw it in Sacramento once and thought it was amazing.
I would like to see it in Baltimore when it plays but I have no money to spend on show tickets (so if anyone has any left overs... I am always willing to take them....)
