I would actually say Elaine Paige's voice sounds brighter and more strident than Patti's. But the original London cast recording also has a completely different sound than the original Broadway cast recording.
I'm honestly really intrigued by the idea of having a singer sing Evita with a more classical approach, as opposed to belting it. I read an interview where Kate Baldwin said she sang the role like it was an opera and it sounded terrible, though...
Kate would sound terrific as Evita!

I feel like people are either too easy on Julia Murney or too hard on her. She handled much of it well, but it's a simple fact that the highest highs were out of her range and A New Argentina was basically a complete mess.
I think Julia is extremely talented in many things, and her acting was fantastic in the Sacramento Evita (I saw it six times), however many people in the audience complained about her voice during and after the performances. I don't think it was the right role for her.
I almost choked on my Cheerios when Muscle mentioned Patti LuPone and Madonna in the same sentence. I mean... really! from RC in Austin, Texas : )
I guess that makes you a fellow Cheerio-Choker ™
Oh, I don't think that Madonna is even close to Patti vocally. But I think they both are mezzos, I could be wrong though.
I saw the tour of Evita starring Sarah Litzinger, and she has a lovely color of voice, but I felt she was singing on the same key the entire show.
An amazing show, especially if you see it live.
I always thought Patti was a contralto, her low F's are just so comfortable.
I would say Patti is probably a mezzo, but with a slightly lower tessitura than most mezzos.

LOL, IKR. My sister wasn't even out into the aisle at intermission before she called her awful. I don't think she had problems with the acting, but she did also call her ungainly. My dad liked her, though. I made an extremely clear recording of it (in my mind, of course - awesome mental replay ability!) and have recalled it enough times to hear it more objectively. There definitely were vocal problems, as much as I like her.
I really want to see Evita with some insanely gifted beautiful unknown who totally knocks it out of the park. I just find it so difficult to imagine a known performer I can see in the role.
Sorry to bump this but I just listened to Patti's Evita and I have perfect pitch and she does indeed sing a G on "is one of you" its E,F, G-F, E. Its really amazing IMO.
Eric Kunze hits the same G at the end of The Money Came Rolling In! Unbelievable! (And in Gethsemane as well, JCS).
