Yes. Thank God, they are.
I saw APATHY-The Gen X Musical last night, and, at first, I was totally offended by their "F*ck RENT" credo (HOW DARE THEY PICK ON THE MOST BELOVED MUSICAL OF THE LAST 10 YEARS????) until I realized that it's just a harmless joke in the show.
BTW: The show was actually quite funny and the score is terrific. Them MITF shows are pretty good while we're waiting for FRINGE to get here!
APATHY was great fun. So was Feasting on Cardigans. You really find more creativity in these Guerilla style theatre festivals. These people really work hard. Next up: SILENCE! The Musical. This FRINGE show looks to be hysterical.

never heard of Apathy, but I got angry just reading this post!! Some RENT jokes are funny (like on Family Guy) but what you just described did not amuse me.

everything what offended you. You said you think some Rent jokes are funny, how do you know the one in this show isn't? Am I missing something? Anyone?
There was a Rent joke on Caroline and the City yesterday... something like "If I wanted to hear a bunch of homeless people singing, I could have done it on the way to the theater."
Chita, I think it's just the vulgarness of saying "F-ck RENT!" like, just saying F-YOU to something I love. I dunno, I know they use that word in the show, and maybe in Apathy the joke is funny but the way it was described on this thread, it didn't come off funny to me.
Hi, there. Totally new to NYC and loving it. Caught a few shows at the Midtown International Theatre Festival last weekend. Liked The Girls Who Wore Black alot. LOVED Apathy. The "F*ck RENT" joke is totally ironic humor and has nothing to do with the show as a whole. The producers probably should have taken into consideration that they might actually offend RENT fans by putting it on their T-SHIRTS: http://www.cafepress.com/apathymusical
The same type of people that love RENT would probably love their show. On the other hand, the show is called APATHY- so who cares anyway?

LOL! They have "F*ck Rent" on their T shirts? Now THAT is funny!!!!
wow lol, i dont get it though-- can someone explain the joke to me because i've never seen the show. I've always wanted to catch RENT jokes on T.V people tell me how they always hear things. I'm a huge FRIENDS fan and the night I went to go see RENT in the city, my mom told me how they were discussing the play RENT on FRIENDS, how weird.

When did they make fun of RENT on Family Guy?

"HOW DARE THEY PICK ON THE MOST BELOVED MUSICAL OF THE LAST 10 YEARS????"
Hold on. RENT won a lot of awards, is popular and successful and deserving of that success.... but it is NOT the most beloved musical of the last 10 years.
And, why not poke fuin at it. Thats what FB does with all shows and no one takes offence.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the phrase "MOST BELOVED MUSICAL OF THE LAST 10 YEARS????"

Yes, etoile, that statement is a bit of an overstatement in my opinion, too.

Indeed, some RENT fans are a bit over the top in their devotion.

Silence: the musical is going to be brillant. well it already is.

Yes, it is a bold statement, but if you had to pick a 'most-beloved musical of the last ten years', taking into consideration popularity, awards, and staying-power, I think I'd have to agree...even if it isn't all that for you

Found this bit from a review on Apathy: The Gen X Musical. Still doesn't quite explain the "F*ck RENT" joke though, does it??

"The ensemble is extremely talented and tight. Apathy: The Gen X Musical is little gem. The time, talent, and care these folks put into making it happen shows. “F*ck Rent” is their credo and pound for pound they do. If you are a fan of this type of musical theatre you couldn’t ask for too much more."

Yes. Some fans of RENT are a bit myopic about it's popularity.

Who would wear a garment with the word f**k printed on it?
ya so I don't get it.. they're just like "F*ck Rent, it sucks?" or what? I'm confused
Rentheads need too get over it - well they need too get over a lot of things.
Rent has the Rentheads - but there are definitely people who don't like this show at all - that dosen't make it the most beloved musical in the last 10 years.

I like RENT just as much as the next guy, I mean I'm going again in a couple weeks. HowEVER. I think it's pretty funny. But why on shirts? That's just silly.
I'd say that, while I think that the poster of the statement comes off as a bit overzelous in his/her defense, calling Rent "the most beloved musical of the last 10 years" is actually pretty accurate. If Rent isn't, then what is? Sure, it has it's detracters, as it is bound to. But just because you don't think the show's popularity is warrented doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.
