FADE OUT - FADE IN Forgotten Carol Burnett musical

Every so often I see references to a 1964 musical called FADE OUT - FADE IN with Carol Burnett, but it’s one of those shows I’ve never really heard or thought much about. It seems to come up here and there in theatre history books or cast album lists, but I’ve never actually met anyone who’s seen it — or even a revival.

From what I’ve read, it was a hit when it opened and then kind of disappeared after Burnett got injured during the run. Apparently, it even out-grossed Hello, Dolly! for a bit before everything went sideways? Was it really that good, or is it more of a “you had to be there” kind of show built around her specific comedy style? And how come it’s never been revived, not even as an Encores! 

Would love to hear from anyone who knows more or remembers it. It’s one of those titles that keeps cropping up, and I’m curious why it’s fallen off the map. And for some reason, I have never explored this show, which is odd for me since I love Carol Burnett and MATTRESS.
