There is a tour of Fiddler coming to Providence in February, but I can't find any real information on it, except its done by Troika Entertainment, which is currently responsible for the CATS tour and the Starlight Express tour. And, apparently, they will be putting together tours for:
West Side Story
Chicago (looks like the revival version)
Crazy for You
Joseph
Evita
Millie
JC Superstar
and Dr. Doolittle
Not too much info on there for the average theater fan, but here is the website for the company: http://www.troika.com/index.html

Posted: 8/24/04 at 4:29pmI think Troika Entertainment only does non-equity tours. Anyone care to confirm that?

Posted: 8/24/04 at 4:54pmI may be wrong, but last I heard (about a week ago) the Evita tour will be a mixed cast (eq and non-eq)

From Equity last January:
"Resolved that Equity members shall not accept employment in any capacity in non-Equity productions produced by Big League Theatricals, NETworks, and Troika."

Starlight Express started out as non equity but about 6 months into the tour they (Troika) had to swap over to equity after much chaos and confusion. The cast was given the choice to stay non equity or become equity but I think that was a special case since the show didnt start out as equity.
I would also like info on the Fiddler Tour since I plan on seeing it in two weeks on the Gulf Coast.

Yes, but it will switch over to non-Equity.
Could someone else confirm that Evita will be an Equity national tour, please. We talked about this a little while ago.

FYI I just saw this show today. I have been told that it is a stripped down version of the Broadway production. This production (Troika) is only 1 hour and 45 minutes with no intermission in it....so far anyway. 12 songs in all. No souvenir programs for sale, no nothing for sale as far as that goes.
I myself however did like the show since I have never seen the Broadway version therefore I cant compare the two.

#14re: FIDDLER ON THE ROOF tour
Posted: 9/6/04 at 3:31amyes CATS, it's the condensed EASY-READER version for people with short attention spans, oh and Teyve only has 2 daughters instead of 3, they couldn't afford another actress.

Posted: 9/6/04 at 4:01amWell, screw that, I'm not going to see the Fiddler tour. Not worth it for the $$$ they might charge.

Posted: 9/6/04 at 8:19amHeh, actually there really were 5 sisters in the Troika show yesterday. But yeah I have heard that compared to the Broadway version it has been stripped to bare bones. But for those of us that wont get a chance to see it on Broadway any time soon it will do for now. Updated On: 9/6/04 at 08:19 AM

Well, here's the deal. The casino that the FIDDLER tour is playing at had requested that the company scale the show down a bit for the venue. If I'm correct, this may be to keep the gamblers in the casino, spending the money!!! If ya know what I mean.
From what I understand, after this short sit-down, the show will continue the tour with the full scale production. It was just shortened for this one stop.
Go see it ... from what I understand, it's a great tour. 'Stexer1974' can you tell us any more about the show? set? costumes? actors? etc.

Posted: 9/7/04 at 12:30amIs this tour based on the current revival? Or the original? They make changes between the two, so I'm just wondering...

Well I will try my best since I am a Historian by trade and not a Musical Theatre person even though I do love Theatre.
John Preece was great as Tevye as well as Hannelies Hepler as Golde. Jessika Graff deserves mentioning also for her role as
Hodel.
The set itself was primarily of Tevye's house and barn and a few tree props and his cart. The Inn and Motels Tailor shops were used a few times. For some strange reason though the beards bothered me. They were very cheesy looking to me for like of a better word.
I believe my favorite part of the whole show though was of Tevye's Dream. My least favorite part was the ending but I feel as if that ending is mutual anywhere and anyhow the show is performed.
I hope that helped answer your questions some. I do have a cast listing if anyone is interested.

This is one of my very favorite shows. How did they do THE DREAM as compared to the Broadway production? What about the other actors? I read an interview with John Preece. It seems that this is supposed to be the 40th Anniversary National Tour. So I assume the Broadway production is the 40th Anniversary, also.
My favorite characters are Motel and Fruma Sarah!!

Posted: 9/7/04 at 10:47pmI don't see how Troika could be touring a version of the current revival. I e-mailed MTI asking about rights for "Tospy-Turvey" and they said that song would only be available if a national tour was done of the current Broadway revival which leads me to believe this is not a "based on the new Broadway production" tour...

Ok. I just came across this thread. I was bored and did a search about our tour and this is what I find, and I find it funny to read some of these posts. Some of them anger me because you obviously do not have all of the facts. Which is why I feel the need to enlighten you all.
Let's see, where to begin...
Ah yes, this confusion over the 1:45 minute version of the show. We teched the show in a casino in Biloxi, MS. For those of you who don't know... casino versions of shows need to be cut down to 90 minutes, why I don't know and I don't care, something to do with attention spans and doing 2 shows a night. I assure you that our real version of the show is just under 3 hours long. We do all the songs that were in the original version of the show.
Which brings me to the next point. Our show is directed by Sammy Dalls Bayes and choreographed by Ken Daigle. You may recognize Mr. Bayes' name from the movie version of FOTR, he was the assistant choreographer and one of the Russian Dancers. Both of these gentlemen have done this show for nearly 40 years and have recreated the ORIGINAL staging and choreography for our tour. The show on broadway is a revival and a completely different version (apparently "de-jewed" as one thread on here said)
As one person on here cleared up, we do have all 5 daughers. I also see someone else cleared up the casino crap.
And now this... I have had the priviledge to work for Troika for the past 3 years, and while I may not agree with some things, I understand that with any production company you have to deal with the same stuff, but every night and even sometimes twice a day... that audience that pays to see our show gets the best damn show they ever saw. The actors and dancers work their butts off. Not to mention the fantastic crew that is in nthose theatres at 8am and working 16 hour days setting up everything just so you, the audience, gets to see the best damn show.
So, the next time you see a traveling tour or a production, remember that there is a lot of stuff you don't see and there is a lot of things that have to happen in order for you to get to enjoy the show, so yeah, it IS worth the money you spend, because it is a way of saying thank you to us, for all of our hard work and dedication to you, the audience.
Oh and to the person who saw the show and didn't like the beards... I agree... I HATE those things, but I realize you saw the show at the beginning, before they were refined and they look a lot more natural, except they are still rigged for quick changes! :)
Thanks!
