FOLLIES Dream Cast

Who would be your DREAM CAST for the FOUR LEAD roles in FOLLIES?

Mine are:

Sally - Barbara Cook

Phyllis - Diana Rigg

Buddy - Peter Gallagher

Ben - Richard Gere

WHAT DO OTHERS THINK?

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Are we talking a concert or a real staging? I mean Cook and Rigg are certainly ideal vocally for a concert, but if this were an actual production, they would both look like Gallagher and Gere's mothers.

Ms. Channing:

EXCELLENT POINT! :)

I was thinking more in terms of an actual production.

In that case, my Phyllis would be Blythe Danner and my Sally would be Linda Eder.

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Richard Gere can't sing and Blythe was Blah in the revival. I saw Diana Rigg do it in London and her voice was poor. Listen to the OCR.

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

I could see Linda Eder as Phyllis much more so than as Sally.
Linda Eder could tear up Could I Leave and Lucy/Jesse.
Yes that's me. No, it's not a Rent homage.

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

I have OCR with Diana Rigg and I agree she does "talk-sing" her way through songs but thought she captured the ESSENCE of the sophisticated, world-weary Phyllis.

Re: Richard Gere, I thought he sounded more than fine in film version of CHICAGO.

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

How about:

Carolee Carmello - Sally
Sigourney Weaver - Phyllis
Harry Groener - Buddy
James Naughton - Ben

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Interesting choices--I don't believe I've ever heard of Sigourney singing?

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

i agree that linda eder would make a better Phyllis

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Sigourney sang in heartbreakers but if i remember right she just talked through the whole song..i dont think she can sing..i could be wrong

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Carolee Carmello singing Losing My Mind...

That would be amazing. re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

I am unfamiliar with Ms. Carmello and her work.

Could someone please help me out?

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Carolee Carmello is the hottest ticket around - there is NOTHING that woman can't do. I'd pay to hear her read the phone book (though thats been said a million times before on here)...and I'd take her over Linda Eder any day of the week
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Ms. Carmello is one of the best performers today. She can be found on the Parade cast recording, as well as john and jen, Elegies, Fine and Dandy, and others.

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

I partially agree.

I love John McMartin, Dorothy Collins AND ESPECIALLY Alexis Smith, but Gene Nelson is an untalented, abriasive presence who gets on my nerves. Gene Nelson isn't a "has been." He's a "never was"!

(And I send my sincere apoligies to all the Gene Nelson Fan Clubs around the world--ALL THREE of them!) :)

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Sigourney was in the frog chorus of The Frogs at Yale, and I think was also in the ensemble of Two Gentlemen of Verona. Lily Pons she's not, but she can carry a tune enough to sing Phyllis' material. More importantly, I think she has the imperiousness and hauteur to carry the role.

Carmello is maybe a smidge too young for Sally, but she's the one I'd most like to hear sing that role. And she's capable of breaking your heart as a performer. After seeing her wildly demented Pennywise in Urinetown, she can also do the madness. Heck, she can do anything.

Groener has the song and dance chops, and there's also something a little sad-sack about him.

Ben's the toughest role to cast. I thought of Naughton because he has a certain gravitas and grandeur, and he'd be interesting to see in Ben's breakdown. Truthfully, I'd love a younger John Cullum to have taken on that role, but I was just thinking about who's around today that could still do it.

As for Gene Nelson, like him or not, "The Right Girl" has apparently never been quite the same without him. He's pretty amazing in the existing footage of that number.

Please keep Richard Gere out. Please.

-Plum, who would come up with other ideas if she hadn't just taken 2 midterms, with two papers due tomorrow

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

They had a dream cast @ Papermill a few years back

The other dream cast was the original cast in 1974

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Ah, yes. Carolee Carmello. The woman with the best voice on Broadway today. Unfortunately her talents are being COMPLETELY thrown away in that garbage, MAMMA MIA. It should be illegal. It's like Meryl Streep doing a Pauly Shore movie.

I'm praying they keep her in mind for CAMELOT when it comes up next year.

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

How about Elaine Paige as Sally? She could certainly sing it and is of the right age.
#23

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Isn't Sally supposed to be the fatter, dumpier of the 2 women? She even says "Look at us...fat..."

Everyone keeps naming these skinny little beauties...I'd much rather see someone like Barbara Cook do it again
Yes that's me. No, it's not a Rent homage.

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Yes, but that song isn't really an accurate description of either character. Ben and Sally are mainly putting themselves down and praising the other. Sally shouldn't be stick-thin, but getting the character right is what matters most.

re: FOLLIES Dream Cast

Except Barbara Cook is about to turn 77. I love her too, but Sally should be around 48-50. Also, the keys were raised for Barbara Cook in the Lincoln Center concert, and I've never thought they sounded quite right.
