Fab Five and RENT...

i met the FAB FIVE today and it was so cool! they were at my college today (university of north texas) and they're redoing my fraternity house (sigma chi). Jai was and still is my favorite! we talked about RENT (of course) and about the RENT movie. He said he's been approached with it, but nothing is official at ALL with the movie. but today was a milestone in my LIFE...i met the FAB FIVE!

Anthony Rapp as Mark
Jai Rodriguez as Angel
Taye Diggs as Benny (well, if he's not busy doing his UPN show)
Brittany Murphy as Maureen

I like the sound of that cast. Of course, if supporting players are cast with fairly big names, one wonders if Columbus could get away with casting Mimi and Roger as unknowns...

That is so cool. I love Jai and the rest of the fab five. I met Kyan at a Howard Dean event and he was so super sweet!

Of course! Brittany Murphy has a sort of raspy yet melodic voice like Idina Menzel, and [if I remember correctly] her character in "Girl, Interrupted" was either lesbian or conveyed lesbian overtones. I think she'd enjoy bringing Maureen to the big screen. I'm just not sure of how successfully Hollywood casting would work for supporting roles if a big name doesn't play either Mimi or Roger.

Her character in Girl, Interrupted was being abused by her daddy and secretly enjoying it. I don't recall there being lesbian under or overtones in it. But she has made out in public with Winona Ryder......

Matt, someone dismissed your suggestion that Jai play Angel? Funny, that's all I've been hearing at IMDB and compulsivebowlers.

Popcultureboy - you're probably right about Murphy in Girl, Interrupted. Nonetheless... if she can belt out a tune as so many individuals say she can, then I think she can pull off the role. I see Maureen having even less screen time than Joanne anyway if the screenplay is faithful to the stage production.

Though Anthony is a little different, I doubt Taye would do the part if Idina wasn't at lesat offered hers....not that I think Idina has to be offered it, because it's a role many people could do, just that I don't see Taye going back and doing the show that he met his wife on in a movie that she wasn't invited to be a part of....or not.....just a thought.

2 things:
Brittany Murphy?!? WTF!! Totally a fan, but I really don't see or hear it...
Taye Diggs did have a hit movie a couple of years ago. It's called How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Or something like that... I haven't seen it in awhile... hot movie though... lots of good lookin people in not a lot of clothes...

VoiceOfReason, that sounds very... reasonable. Taye may not want to return without Idina. Sean Patrick Thomas -- who has done musical theater before, and costarred in Save The Last Dance -- is probably worth considering for Benny.

Brittany Murphy doesn't make sense to you now, Lizzy, but after hearing her sing, maybe you'll change your mind!

Is Kyan really dating Robert Gant from Queer As Folk? Now THAT is a hot couple.

At first I couldn't see Brittany as Maureen, but now I'm starting to think it could be a good idea if she can sing OTM. (Another threadjack: You know, I was thinking, if "Maureen" can sing the "Gotta gotta gotta gotta..." part while whipping her head back and forth and still hold the notes properly, then there's really no reason why "singers" like Britney Spears and the Spice Girls can say that their strenuous "dancing" - ie. hoppin' a little, jigglin' a little - is the reason they need to lipsync at concerts, eh?)
