I should think that it would be a thrill to see the greatest living American stage actress read the phone book. Sorry, if you don't. But, fyi, anything tacky said about Cherry Jones will be treading into rough waters around these parts!

Silly gander.
I like Cherry Jones a lot, especially her performance in Tongue of a Bird at the Public.
But Ralph Fiennes is an INTERNATIONAL theatre great! And to me he's the hottest part of that ticket!
As far as American actresses go, if Zoe Wanamaker still has American citizenship, she is IT for me...

Posted: 1/23/06 at 1:41pmI won't debate you on the merits of casting Cherry Jones (personally, I'm looking forward to seeing her as it's a real departure), but I'm curious as to why you see the role of Grace requiring a "non-star" -- and who would you like to see in the role? How do you feel about the Teddy role? Is Ian McDiarmid too big for the role?

[possible spoiler]
I've read this play. It's interesting, though as I recall the monologues are kind of disjointed from each other as a play goes... As I recall, one of the characters is blind and there is a lot of anguish involving gaining of eyesight and adjusting to that... Some stunning emotional consequences. I think the actors have a great piece of meat to chew in this one.

Sorry to both of you, but as long as Julie Harris is still BREATHING, she is the greatest living American stage actress.

I agree with popcultureboy.
Your posting about Cherry Jones was out to lunch when Ralph Fiennes is the real headliner.
At least Backstage knew that when they titled their article.
Don't post asking for response and then dis people, Zelda. Look in the mirror instead.

Well, I guess since I was the only one to ask any questions, mine must have been "inane."
So Zelda, what's up with the gross generalizations? You seem pretty comfortable with the big opinions, but can't get specific? And, while I haven't seen the poster and don't know for a fact, if Cherry's name is "the star name above the title," where does that leave Fiennes? Is he below the title with Ian?
Ooops, sorry. More inane questions....
