I'm quite dissapointed this has never been on Broadway. It would have been a hit...back in the 80's to early 90's. I was looking through the score and reading the book, and I must say, it's VERY dated. I actually got a good laugh out of it.
Hard Work is a lot worse than I remember. 13 minutes. Then we have I wanna make magic. The lyrics are extremely corny, especially in the reprise. 1 guy sings "Magic" then a girl sings "Magic" then another girl, then another guy whispers "Magic", in a very dramatic emotional tone. H-I-L-L-A-R-I-O-U-S!!!
Think Of Meryl Streep is by FAR the worst song i've ever heard. Shockingly bad!
I certainly hope that if they revive this for Broadway, they also REVISE it. Oh, and don't even get me started on the orchestrations...

Posted: 7/31/07 at 3:51pmThis show should not be done. My high school did it a few years ago. Despite how well it was done, it was a big joke to sit through.

Posted: 7/31/07 at 3:58pmHaha, I saw it in London a long time ago...I enjoyed it, but then again, I was really young and the cast was talented. I listened to it again a few weeks ago, and I must say I agree...it really is so bad it's good.

Posted: 7/31/07 at 9:04pmWait, they are redoing this movie now too. Any ideas on who will be in it?

Fame is a fun show which is on its 11th year run here in the UK but it has been dumbed down since the coconut grove playhouse production(quite gritty with act 1 ending with a riot) and the cambridge theatre production here in the uk.
The show still does huge business though , i was in it for over 2 years and had a blast and the young audience were inspired by this show.
The new movie is a remake of the very gritty 80s movie not the stage show

Posted: 7/31/07 at 11:39pmYes the show is corny. I just finished a run of it playing Nick. But it was a lot of fun to perform. The audience loved every 2nd of it. If its done with the right cast the show can be amazing!

re: Fame The Musical#9
Posted: 8/1/07 at 4:25amIt played the Little Shubert Theatre on 42nd St and had a run of just over 300 performances. It was renamed as 'Fame on 42nd St'. A CD of the NY cast is available. Its a big money maker in the UK but its recent revival at the Shaftesburt theatre recieved some pretty bad reviews and very poor houses. General feeling now is that its had its day in the West End and closes in August.

The show has always received very mix reviews and this time was no different.
I was in the show when it was still a bit darker etc and we got rubbish reviews from some press but that has never stopped the show.
4 of my friends are in the Shaftsbury Production of Fame and it has not had bad attendance at all.I went to see the show on a weds and it was packed and thats what the houses have been like most times.
The UK tour is also doing fantastic business , so far this tour has been the second highest grossing Fame UK tour since Fame 2000

Here's the IMDB page for it:

And the notice in Playbill:

Doesn't seem like any cast has been announced yet.

Posted: 12/4/07 at 6:13pmI'm working on a production right now and I think maybe if it was reworked (quite) a bit, it could be a really pretty good show. some of the music is actually pretty good, and the book isn't that bad. I don't know, I wish someone would do something with it.
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofure: Fame The Musical#13

Probably one of the all time WORST shows. I saw the touring cast a few years ago in Orlando and had to leave at intermission.
And then a few years back I ended up playing piano for a high school production. The WORST! The only highlight was when they did about a verse and a half of the song "Fame." That was the only decent song in the show, and it lasted about 45 seconds!
The only show worse than this (IMO) is the musical version of "A Wonderful Life." I ended up conducting a production of it a few years back and counted the days 'til it closed.

Like i say
Its a great stomping ground for dancers/singers and actors, it gave me my start and i had the best 2 years of my life in it.
But yes the show is a camp mess what really lost its way
If you can ever get a copy of the bootleg dvd from its original 88 coconut grove playhouse production i think you would be very surprised

We had a limited run of FAME in Czech Republic in Brno City Theatre, with british and german actors, and yes, it was great, but it isn't so strong show than others. There are some rumors about czech CD with this great cast. I will inform you about situation of it, if this will be interesting for you.
I love "Let's Play A Love Scene", "I Want To Make Magic" and especially "Dancing On The Sidewalk" Yes, I don't like "Think of Meryl Streep", it's quite boring, but I enjoyed entire show a lot!

Posted: 12/25/07 at 12:01amNothing like the movie and doesn't have the same songs. A problem with a lot of the movies that had featured music (Saturday Night Fever, Footloose) is the story looses its grit and dramatic factors when turned into a musical. The cool factor that made the movie popular is gone.
