I hate them. Who was in charge of the costumes for this revival? I think that both Fantine and Cosette's outfits are completely wrong for their characters. First off, Cosette looks like a tramp, going off the time and character from the original story, she would never have worn such a revealing outfit, nor would she have worn a choker. She is a modest girl who once lived in a convent, and her father would have never let her dress that way. Second, Fantine, why is she dressed in such a nice dress? She is a stuggling factory worker who sends all her money to her daughter, but yet she is wearing a nicer dress than the rest of the worker girls?

I know it isn't that big of a deal, but little details like these just ruin shows for me.

I like the new Cosette dress... She actually stands out from the set.

I also love the white Cosette dress. The original black one was just ugly. This one makes her look like the object of Marius's affection.

I don't like the white dress. It's the material that irks me. It's glossy. Don't like it...

I love them. Or at least, like them much better than Cosette's old dress, which was drab. That being said . . .

She is a modest girl who once lived in a convent, and her father would have never let her dress that way.

There was the whole section in the book where Hugo described Cosette as the best dressed girl in Paris, and that Valjean let her by whatever she wanted, and in that women would be able to tell Cosette had no mother because she wore improper things like crepe. (I think that was the name of the improper material. I'm no fashion expert.)

I like the new costumes a hell of a lot more. Cosette's blue and white from the original did look like she was part of the set, it was funny looking and you couldn't take her seriously. The new color is a lot better, specially with Ali's complexion, she would clash with that horrid blue.

With Fantine's dress, it has some patches on it. But in the book, Fantine was still trying to keep up her old lifestyle before the Thenardiers started writing letters that Cosette was dying. The first thing Fantine sold was her nice furniture and clothes. Fantine's reason for not having Cosette with her was not financial. She didn't have Cosette with her because then people would know her secret, and she wouldn't be hired anywhere.

It was damask. There was a line that mentioned one could tell Cosette had no mother to tell her damask was not appropriate for a young woman.

And I think the new costume is a bit more in keeping with that part of the book. In fact, the evening that Cosette and Marius first meet in her garden, she is wearing a dress with a neckline that had...I'm paraphrasing because my dog is sleeping on my foot and I can't grab my copy of the novel..."one snip of the scissors too many."

I always HATED her black dress because of it. Yes, she was convent-raised. But later, Valjean allowed her to buy what dresses she liked...she overheard someone refer to her as a "pretty woman, but poorly dressed" when she was still wearing her drab convent-type black dress and bonnet. Except for the bulkly lace collar, the old Cosette costume was just too Jane Eyre for me.

Spacedog78: Have you read the novel? The minute Cosette finds out that she's actually rather beautiful, not ugly as she believed, she goes out and buys fashionable clothing. Her ugly black dress in the musical was actually the OOC one and I always hated it. In the novel, she is very well-dressed, and that's actually part of the reason Marius first notices her once she's become pretty (he sees her a year before, ugly and and badly-dressed, and is like "Eh.")

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

Are there any pictures available?

Dean: Can I tell you something? Lorraine: That depends on what it is. Dean: I think you're really really pretty. Lorraine: (after a pause) Ok, you can tell me that.

What's different about Fantine's dress now compared to then?

What's this about a chain?

Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia
