In order of how much i love them:
Molina (Kiss of the Spider Woman)& Prior (Angels in America)
(No explanatation necessary)
Paul(A Chorus Line)
("One day I looked in the mirror and said, 'You're fourteenyears old and you're a faggot. What are you going to do with your life?'" So amazing.)
Collins/Angel (Rent)
(Just listen to the bits and pieces of Rent that Angel and collins sing to and about each other. So dynamic and powerful. )

Collins and Angel and Joanne/Maureen from Rent
The Emcee from Cabaret
Hedwig
2. Great buckets of Spoffnor, they're going to sing!
3. "I love shrubs that are historical." -Johnny and The Sprites
4. "We're not singing it to you, we're singing it for us." -Rosario Dawson, about La Vie Boheme
5. "The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours." -The History Boys
6. "Pass the parcel. That's sometimes all you can do. Take it, feel it and pass it on. Not for me, not for you, but for someone, somewhere, one day. Pass it on, boys. That's the game I want you to learn. Pass it on." -The History Boys

FIFTH OF JULY is a personal favorite of mine, as well. I can still watch the Broadway Theatre Archive DVD today and get chills. I think that Ken is one of the best written characters ever. And I totally agree with you regarding Ken and Jed being a "real" gay couple. God, it's such a great show.

Rod is fun,
But i'd have to go with Malcolm from "The Full Monty." Such a sweet, funny role to play, and "You Walk With Me" is gorgeous.

Showing my age a bit, but here goes my list of characters not already named by others -- NOT comprehensive and not in order of preference, but just as they come to mind:
1. Rich and Saul in AS IS (played wonderfully by Jonathan Hogan and Jonathan Hadary in the original production).
2. Larry in BURN THIS (played by Lou Liberatore, in a GREAT Tony-nominated performance -- unfortunately, he was up against BD Wong for M. BUTTERFLY and didn't stand a chance).
3. the lesbians of Jane Chambers's LATE SNOW and LAST SUMMER IN BLUEFISH COVE (okay, those were Off-Bway, but I'm listing them anyhow).
4. Alan Turing in BREAKING THE CODE (Derek Jacobi was dazzling and heartbreaking).
5. Max and Horst in BENT (who can forget them making love without even touching?!).
6. Buzz and James Jeckyll in LOVE VALOUR COMPASSION.
7. Ned and Felix in THE NORMAL HEART.
8.And though I'm not old enough to have seen this one onstage in person, if Harold in BOYS IN THE BAND deserves icon status (and I think he does), then so does June in THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE -- a character who always moves me, even though she seems a bit of a stereotypical lesbian nowadays.

Posted: 6/27/05 at 2:28amI'll add a second vote to Max and Horst from BENT. I know there are some who don't find it as compelling as I do, but that play ripped me to shreds. And Max's final speech to Horst as he held him in his arms is one of the most impactful I've experienced in a theatre.

By far my favorite is Arnold - Torch Song Trilogy. Harvey wrote an incredible part and an amazing play.

I just want to respond to some some criticism over what I said in my last post here.
I didn't intend for my comments to be a scathing insult upon you.
And, I do hope that all of you WILL go to the library or bookstore and read TORCH SONG TRILOGY and LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! and KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN and JEFFREY and ANGELS IN AMERICA and BENT and AS IS and FALSETTOS. Etc. Etc. I know that BARE and ALTARBOYZ and SPAMALOT are fun shows--and maybe they really are your faves, but I honestly do not think you will feel exactly the same after reading some of the aforementioned plays and musicals.
Don't take this as an insult--take it as advice for a richer theatre knowledge. :)

Posted: 6/27/05 at 4:19pmI'll second jrb's recommendation -- there are some really good anthologies of gay theater in print, and a few now OOP that you can buy used or get from libraries. People interested in gay theater or theater featuring gay characters might really enjoy exploring the plays that paved the way for RENT or BARE on Bway today.

Posted: 6/27/05 at 4:26pmI do have to say that I love Peter from BARE despite his recent origin, and I love Angel from Rent and Albin from La Cage...sigh. I've been trying to get around to experiencing Falsettos for a while, and thank you for the other reccomendations as well.

Posted: 6/27/05 at 4:46pmYeah, it behoves us to honor early gay work. Without LAST SUMMER and even BOYS IN THE BAND, more recent work wouldn't have a context. You younger posters, read BOYS IN THE BAND, and see the truthful writing (admittedly era specific) beneath any PC concerns that may arise, justifiably. The voices and personal fights of the characters -- and Crowley's honesty, for his times -- help illutrate a lot of the evolution of gay culture. It's striking how much of the play's social dynamic -- the parts NOT necessarily self-depricatory -- mirrors a universal aspect of gay culture. The men speak to one another with a blistering gay shorthand, one that can only be shared comfortably and safely within the community. That's why the perceived 'outsdider' or interloper in the play is so threatening. I find that aspect of the play remarkably timeless.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Emory in Boys in the Band. "Ask him if he's got any hot cross buns!"
Though, technically, this never actually ran on Broadway.
