There are a bunch out there. Which one is your favorite?
Mine is the OBC followed by the Barcelona Cast.

This isn't specifically about favorites, but there was a thread about Sweeney recordings just recently:

ETA: Anyone know where I could acquire a copy of the Barcelona recording. I've always heard good things about it.

I must say OBC, it is just so complete what more could you ask for, except perhaps just different takes after hearing it from other recordings? The final sequence is the greatest. I am still fuming that Foggs Asylum->City on Fire!->Spoiler, but those who know the show know what I am talking about, was cut from the revival recording. Especially considering that it pretty much had the most dynamic change of any of the songs from the original orchestrations. Plus it was chillllllinggggg! Even more chlling the the a.c. in the Palace!

Posted: 2/1/06 at 9:30pmThe NY Philharmonic recording for sure. Love Hearns (that's him right)?). It also is more complete than the OBC and has some great dialogue. The orchestra is AWESOME too. It's wonderful....then the OBC, then the revival.

Posted: 2/1/06 at 9:48pmI go more for the complete score and when these revival cd people cut City on Fire, thats when I go ape-****. You can't cut one of the most erratic and climactic buildups in the show, especially with all the extra room left on the discs. Something I won't recover from for a very long time.

Posted: 2/1/06 at 9:49pmI love the revival orchestrations and arrangement. But for the lack of CITY ON FIRE and, more for me (because I think it turned out even better than the original) PARLOR SONGS, I have to say the OBC.

Posted: 2/1/06 at 9:50pmYes, I am missing that, but the songs that are on the CD are priceless. Quality not quantity. Yes, Angela is great, but I, personally love Patti.

Oh my gosh, you're right BSoBW3, Parlor Songs isn't there. Okay yeah that bother me even more because Alexander is given such a small part of the cd.
And I also find Michael to be extremely one dimensional on this recording. The only I enjoyed him on in the cd is Johanna and My Friends. Other than that, I find you have to watch his performance to enjoy his take on the role otherwise it is just monotonous. And Patti has her moments on the cd, but nothing to rave about. Angela just has such a mark on her role, although Patti gives an excellent portrayl that was so refreshingly different I can't decide. However, the rest of the cast is full force and the orchestrations are what really do it here.

Posted: 2/1/06 at 10:22pmYes, Michael doesn't sound at all on the CD like he did in the show. His voice doesn't transfer well to recording. What is in the Parlor Songs portion?

Posted: 2/1/06 at 10:30pmI think she sounds great, but in the show she was amazing. Her expressions make her character, but a few of her high notes shake a bit. I didn't notice that at all in the show. But, she is still a awesome singer.

I prefer the original recording, Lansbury can never be replaced.
Also did anyone else find it annoying that the Revival cd's arnt split by the first and second act, like the original was? That really is bothering me.

Katurian -
Parlor Songs is when the Beadle comes to investigate the weird smell coming from the oven.
"Sweet Polly Plunkett lay in the grass,
Turned her eyes heavenward, sighing,
I am a lass who alas loves a lad
Who alas has a lass in Canterbury.
Tis a row dow diddle dow day,
Tis a row dow diddle dow dee"

Posted: 2/1/06 at 10:39pmOh yes- I remember seeing that now. Thank you! Yes dirty rotten guy- I didn't like the dividing of the new recording. But, it is nice to hear Little Preist and Johanna and God, That's Good all in a row. It makes me happy.
