I think Glinda has more of a transformation in Wicked than Elphaba. Going from stuck up rich girl, not liking Elphaba at all, to the complete opposite. I mean Elphaba does go through one too, but its more expected.

I enjoy both Elphie's and Glinda's transformations.

It's probably safe to say just about all the lead characters in "Into the Woods" go through amazing transformations in character, since it's a good portion of the plot. It's by going into the woods that they are able to move out of their comfort zones and find themselves. It's a brilliant plot, and i love the show so much. Sondheim is my role model.

And of course, Eliza Doolittle is the original extreme make-over, the model on which all other transformations in musicals and life are based. Which is why "My Fair Lady" is such a classic, and my dad's favourite musical.

Louise is a big one, as are Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle.

Also, Prof. Harold Hill and Marion Paroo in The Music Man. Neither are quite as big as some others in other shows, but still good.

Sweeney is also a transformation. He starts off just being ticked off and wanting his revenge, but in the end, he is driven truly mad. And anyone who doesn't think that those are different weren't paying attention to the finale:
"To seek revenge may lead to hell -
But everyone does it, and seldom as well
As Sweeney."

I'd think of some others, but I should really get to bed.

I agree about Amneris in "Aida". She has a much more challenging arc than Aida or Radames in that show. I was privileged enough to work with an incredible Amneris who brought out all of the comedy in Amneris' early "bimbo" scenes without parodying them. By the judgement scene and the last number, she had undergone incredible suffering (keeping us with her every step of the way) and become a strong, unyielding force of nature. As a friend put it, "She starts out Jessica Simpson and ends up Margaret Thatcher."

There's also a great little campy show called "Ruthless"--it's not intended to be realistic, but the main character, Judy, starts as a cheery, empty-headed, trilling Stepford Wife and metamorphoses by Act Two into a grasping, belt-it-out, Broadway diva. Meanwhile, her adorable curly-haired daughter Tina (a takeoff on Annie, Baby June, and every other Broadway brat) goes from a disgustingly sweet model child to a monstrous, coldhearted killer. Certainly startling.

I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."

The Beast's transformation is pretty awesome to behold. You can see him slowly changing on the inside during the show, but then BAM! It's an incredible visual.
