Beauty and the Beast, absolutely.

Lion King is also great, but after a recent re-watch, the show is kind of jumbled. It can't decided whether it's a kid's or adult's show.

" saw the tour back in February and I could not agree more. Supercal was a great number, but it seemed out of place without the market scene to precede it. Taking Temper, Temper out of the show was a huge mistake. The new song Playing the Game is not anywhere near as good. Despite these things, I absolutely LOVED the show."

What market scene are you referring to? I saw the tour recently also, and if you're referring to like Corry's word shop, thats still there. Is there something else that was in the show before?

I also think playing the game worked well in the show, but I agree, it was lacking a little.

"Beauty and the Beast" because it holds a special place in my heart. It was the first musical I ever saw. But I also enjoyed "Mary Poppins" and "Lion King"

It's the only one I haven't seen, but I feel like the Hunchback of Notre Dame MIGHT have been my favorite. I mean, from the cast recording alone.

Of the shows that have played Broadway, I think Beauty & the Beast is probably my favorite. (And it's actually the first professional stage musical I saw... while in Toronto, no less.)

I caught Lion King & Mary Poppins on separate occasions in London. So I never saw their Broadway productions either. But I thought they were both highly enjoyable.

And I found Tarzan & The Little Mermaid to be just terrible... and I was looking forward to Little Mermaid the most.

(Though as one person pointed out, yes, the loincloth in Tarzan WAS pretty great. It made that show watchable.)

1) Tarzan- I know I will catch quite a bit of banter about this, but I loved this show. The opening scene was amazing, and even though the rest of it didn't hold up to that scene, the rest of it was still great. The score by Phil Collins really gave the show heart which I think is lacking in most of these other shows. Personally, I felt horrible when Kerchek died in Tarzan. However, the other shows I never felt sad for any character. No substance... Heart is why I loved Tarzan the most, but this is just my opinion. I know you guys probably won't agree, but that is how it is. My friend who came with me didn't like theater at the time we saw it (shortly before closing)... and I told him this show was about to close, and he couldn't understand why. He loved this show, and he was able to get into theater due to this show.

2) Beauty and the Beast- I loved this show. Two of the best broadway songs on stage... "If I can't love her" and "A Change in me"... The set was fantastic and the transformation scene will be unforgettable. However, I did find it kiddish at times. It comes in a very close second to Tarzan.

3) Lion King- Without the set or costumes, this show would be nothing. However, they do exceed expectations. There just isn't any substance in this show. Nothing to hold on to when you leave. All I said when I left was "Wow! The costumes and set were incredible." Nothing more than that though...

4) Mary Poppins- The show was good, but I just wanted more. I never really like Mary Poppins as a child, so that could be reasoning. The set was great, but not as good as Lion King. The music was good, but not as good as Tarzan or Beauty and the Beast. This show just didn't have it when I saw it. Loved the doll house though... very creative.

5) Little Mermaid- With the exception of the great Norm Lewis and the emergence of Sierra Boggess... the show was a wreck.

I wish we could include Aida, because that show was very good. Would be ahead of Lion King, and might have beaten Beauty and the Beast at 2.

Without a doubt Beauty and the Beast, with Mary Poppins being a close second. I adored Tarzan too, even if I was the only one.

tarzan for sure! it was just a wonderful show, and i still miss it every now and then. for the first has to be one of my favorite songs of all time.

then the little mermaid will always have a special place in my heart. it was the first opening night i ever got to attend and well it actually made me cry towards the end... i am still slightly ashamed to admit that, but it's true.

I am shocked to hear that the street market scene was removed from Mary Poppins.

Let's see:

Well, since Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King were the first shows I ever saw, period, they're both tied for first. I absolutely adored the scores, the sets, the casts...when I saw Beauty and the Beast, Kerry Butler and Marc Kudisch were in the cast...and I did NOT know who they were. I was only seven at the time. But I saw The Lion King with nearly the entire original cast (Max Casella was out) and I left the theater on cloud nine!

Aida: I'm a fan of the show but at the same time, I will swear with my dying breath that Michael John LaChiusa should have tied with himself for Marie Christine and The Wild Party for Best Score!

Mary Poppins...I saw it in London and this was before Gavin Lee left to do the Broadway production...I'm pretty certain the transfer had already been announced. I watched Gavin and thought to myself, "He's gonna get nominated for Best Featured Actor and he's gonna win for sure!" But you must understand, this was before I even knew that a musical called Spring Awakening existed so I didn't know John Gallagher, Jr. was gonna win and that Gavin was gonna be nominated in the Lead category. I loved every second of it!

Little Mermaid and Tarzan....didn't see them...didn't want to see them...and knowing that they basically rewrote the screenplay to one of the first movies I ever saw for the purpose of putting it onstage...DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!!
