I loved the set design for the revival of SOUTH PACIFIC at Lincoln Center. Of course, it was the set with the lighting that made it so stunning.

In that same space, I also loved THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA.

toanythingtaboo 2: I agree. For anyone who has the opportunity to be in Las Vegas, do not miss KA. The pictures I posted don't even begin to do the theater / design justice. KA is spectacular.

I had the great fortune of being given a backstage tour after seeing KA. Although I prefer my front of the house experience, the technology that they're using was beyond my wildest imagination of what was possible to recreate live, night after night, performance after performance. The wild part is that what we see is beyond description, but what's going on behind the scenes, and never seen by the audience, is equally amazing. To keep KA safe (relative term) there is a huge range of technology that is completely transparent to the audience.

One moment that is particularly amazing is the beach scene and the transition out of it. The main stage which you can see from the photographs is capable of motion in multiple directions (360 degree rotation, elevation up and down, and the ability to tilt to almost 90 degrees - all of this in any combination of the three motions at any time!) Anyway, the beach is played on a level stage that is filled with sand (actually cork, but I only know that from going backstage) when the sequence is over there is a need to show the passing of time, so the stage tilts and the sand is poured into the basement below, actor included!

What you don't see is a train of bins that line up exactly where the cork will land. These bins capture the cork to be reused in subsequent performances. Even with this elaborate train of bins some of the cork is lost each performance and is constantly being refreshed by new supplies.

There are many nets and balloon like cushions that slide in and out of place all without the knowledge of the audience. The show is considered to be one of the most expensive and lavish productions in the history of theater. (I have heard rumors of costs of $200 million dollars!) In fact, the show ends with a firework display that although short, would put many firework climaxes to shame. And, this is all indoors.

^ I agree with the posters about Cirque du Soleil's KA. The entire production, from the singing, makeup, costuming, lighting, set, and even the ornate theatre, is stunning! I saw the show in the center of second row, and seeing the show that close was amazing. This show is definitely on the top of the list of the shows I've seen! When you're in Las Vegas, please make an effort to see it!
