I've got to give merit to Denis for thanking his boyfriend in public. It's sad in this world we don't see enough of that courage among the public more.
I loved Rose's Turn and Hairspray!

Rose's Turn was without a doubt the best performance I have ever seen on the Tony awards. Bernadette was robbed.

i was dissapointed in hairspray and movin out's performence. i enjoyed them but for hairspray i thought there was to much going on at onces. this # works better live on a smaller stage. i saw it on broadway so i know. and i thought marrissa was screaming at the beging and kerry butler seemed nervouse on her solo. she was not danceing as much as she does in the show while singing her part. and for moveing out i also felt that too much was going on at once. they were all awsome dancers i just felt the camera did not know what to focus on. to me the best performence was from bernadette peters she was awsome and should have won for best actress, but it done and over with i am happy for marrisa :) does anyone eles feel the same way about these performences
I thought "Rose's Turn" was the worst thing I have ever seen from a production of that show. Bernadette was not robbed, she should be thankful that they even acknowledged her. I love her work, but not this one! She needs to realize limitations and Rose is one of them.

what was so bad about it actorgaedu??? please elaborate!!!

Please actorgaedu, provide details why she was not good.
There was no brass to her delivery. I didn't feel for her as Rose or think that she truly wanted to have her moment. I thought she sounded flat (in a delivery sense, not musical) and hoarse. I remember seeing Tyne Daly and Linda Lavin do this role over ten years ago and they just made me feel for Rose and how brassy and gutsy she is as a woman and mother. I like Bernadette, but a Rose she is not to me.

Well I thought her performance tonight was all gut, and sexy, and frustrated and filled with anger (as Rose, not when she didn't win). Bernadette is not a brassy singer, but I don't think that this number needs to be all brass to be effective. The point of the revival is to revisit this specific character in terms closer to the real Momma Rose.
It is too bad that so many people have such a strong idea of what Rose has to be that they can't see a new, but totally legitimate interpretation.

I thought that Bernedette did very well. I wasn't at all impressed with Antonio Banderas' singing though. The women were so much more talented. I wish there was more of them.

I agree with KB. I thought the number from Nine was not the best one to do for the Tonys. The show has three or four minutes to perform for the people sitting at home, so the viewers can say "Yeah! I want to see that show!" Nine has soooo many other better songs. Antonio was difficult to understand, and I know the lyrics. The women should have been more involved.
I was totally blown away by Bernadette's performance. Hairspray...eh- they can do much better- Marissa sounded off tonight- and Kerry didn't get as into it as usual, I also don't like how they had to cut it, but whatever. Movin' Out was ok...but the camera wrk bugged me at times.

I loved Bernadette's stammered 'Mammas', but overall, she wasn't my favorite part of the evening. Though she was better than I expected.
I loved Hairspray. That cast is sooo talented. It was one of their better television appearances, as to be expected. The way that they cut the number was off a bit in my opinion, though I am glad they included stuff that they normally don't. Yes, the larger stage did detract from the number though.
I loved Marissa's speech. Go girl!!!!!!!!!!
Harvey -- yes, they do need an award for best ensemble. Thank you.
Marc and Scott -- great speech. Loved the part about 'I can't marry this man and I don't know why...'. Amen. Same to Denis O'Hare.
I was most impressed with Bernadette and Brian Stokes Mitchell, and I really didn't expect to enjoy his number.
My favorites were Hairspray and Gypsy. Good job to everyone, though!
I was blown away by Brian Stokes Mitchell. Other than that, I wasn't too impressed by any of the other performances. It's always better in person, I guess.
5) Billy Joel's performance
4) Michelle Pawk's acceptence speech
3) Brian Stokes Mitchell's performance
2) Bernadette's turn. Gave me goose bumps as did Brian Stokes Mitchell
1: Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman's acceptance speech.

Brian Stokes Mitchell absolutely blew me away! I, like another member of this message board, didn't expect what was to come. It was an OUTSTANDING (and that's an understatement) performance. It's no wonder he's one of Broadway's current treasures!

Hairspray Rocked...was thrilled with its wins..
Actorgaedu, this is what makes Life so interesting. See, I also saw Tyne Daly and Linda Lavin essay "Rose" in the last revival of GYPSY. While I was thrilled with Daly, I thought Lavin was horrible, horrible, horrible. I almost walked. But you thought she was great. And that's okay, too.
That being said, I also thought BP was quite good in "Rose's Turn". Sure, it was a different take on the role, but that's what made it all the more interesting to me. I'd love to see her do the full show -- and do the full number, instead of truncated version.
I believe her loss was a direct result of missed performances during previews/early in the run. Too bad.
1) Nine. I like how they managed to get everyone on-stage for the bit of 'Overture del Donne' and then Antonio singing 'Guido's Song' until he was sweating. I love that show.
2) Bernadette Peters and 'Rose's Turn.' That has to be one of the most emotionally driven Bernadette performances I have ever seen. Amazing.
3) Michele Pawk's speech. I said it before, I'll say it again: most graceful and heartfelt speech of the night.
4) Stokes Stokes Stokes! He can sing the hell out of that song.
5) Denis O'Hare jumping up and down. Gotta love anyone who jumps up and down.
6) Jane Krakowski. How sweet was she?
HAIRSPRAY's ensemble was incredible! I loved the way they reworked the number. I also loved MOLM (brian was wonderful)
Michelles,Marissas,Harveys,Marc and Scotts speeches...and um was that a joke with TWYLA smiling? cuz if thats her smile, what the hell is her frown like?
I absolutely LOVED Bernadette- the show looks so great. I'm a little bit upset that it didnt win any tonys. I hope it doesnt close, cuz I wanna see it! Yes, Marissa did sound off, but her high, high energy made up for it all. God, I love that number! Brian Stokes Mitchell was great, and I really enjoyed the performance of Movin' Out. I really didnt like A Year With Frog and Toad. I can see why its closing, although I'm glad it came to Broadway. We need shows for kids. I was a little bit upset, as it was very different from last year. They had more clips from each show. For instance, before the set, lighting, and costume awards were given, they showed the nominees talking about the show, and little snippets of each show. They didnt do that as much this year, but I enjoyed it anyway.

What about at the end of Impossible Dream, when Stokes and Mary Elizabeth were getting ready to bow, she had this litlle shrug that she did and an expression that looked she was thinking "don't know why I'm bowing. I didn't do anything". LOL.
