There is no wire in Clara's hat. It is hooked up to a tiny cherry picker that magically lifts her hat in the air so it LOOKS like it is flying into Fabrizio's hands. The rest is done with lights and smoke.

It's the same string stuff they choose to make the kids fly in Peter Pan, I think.

Then Matt Morrison catches the hat and he manually takes the "wire string" off the hat and gives the hat back to Kelli O'Hara. He has mentioned that he had one accident where the wire wouldn't come off, and he had to rip it or something, and his hand was bleeding because of it.
