Wow, if it isn't a wire (coming from someone who sounds like they know), could it be that nylon thread like they use for fishing?
I think "wire" is a loose enough term that it would cover that.
Then again, maybe it is some new NASA space age material.
Or a mystical thread of consciousness which attaches to hats of the lovelorn.

No, dental floss would show. And think of all the little knots you'd have to have to get a piece long enough. Plus it would be all curled up and twisted.
